Endless Debt Chapter 1491 - 60: Rescue Operation (Part 2)
Previously on Endless Debt...
The sound of explosions arose in succession, and the bodies of the Bloodthirsty swelled one after another, bursting into countless fragments and spreading blood mist.
A few of them trudged through the corpses and bloodstains, reaching Bologue’s gaze. Just as they were about to swipe their claws to sever Bologue’s head, the arc of Ether flashed on Bologue, executing a strike so swift that the naked eye could barely discern it, accomplished effortlessly in a breath.
The Bloodthirsty brushed past Bologue, charging several meters along their path before stumbling and falling to the ground, bodies shattered, with the cut surfaces of flesh and blood incredibly smooth and neat, blood gushing out and pushing the bloody atmosphere of the space to the extreme.
"These Bloodthirsty have not been armed."
Bologue kicked away the corpse at his feet, "Not wearing armor, nor undergoing alchemical implants... Looks like a newly born batch."
In the previous battle at the Wind Source Highlands, Bologue encountered masses of Bloodthirsty. They were mad like beasts and underwent subsequent armed enhancements like alchemical creatures. For High Tier Condensers, they posed little threat, but they could exert significant pressure on Low Tier Condensers, even enough to scatter their formations when gathered in groups.
But Bologue is no longer the Low Tier Condenser he once was. As a Defender, killing these mindless beasts is as easy as striking down street gangs.
His consciousness guided the Ether, an invisible blade tip swept forward along the corridor. Bologue didn’t see the nearing Bloodthirsty, but the consecutive explosions from the darkness announced their demise.
"All Night Race, except Olivia, are hostile targets."
Bologue reiterated the regulations, striding forward as Palmer followed closely, hand placed on Bologue’s shoulder, eyes tightly shut, as if using Bologue as a guiding staff.
Birds still flew recklessly within the underground space, carrying pieces of information, returning to Palmer, constructing a model of a nest made entirely of these informational twigs within his mind.
Palmer furrowed his brow, sweat beading on his forehead, and the outline of the entire underground space became increasingly clear in his mind. He saw many single rooms resembling cells, arranged together to form a massive underground prison.
Many people lived within, their breaths weak, and many were being moved deeper inside. The myriad of breaths became increasingly distinct until the sounds seemed to echo directly in Palmer’s ears.
Palmer heard them, mentally repeating those words.
"Help... Help..."
"Move them... Send them away immediately."
"Onto the ship, onto the ship, don’t stop."
Ruthless words intertwined with a mournful tone, shaping a painful scene, familiar to Palmer. As early as the Decline Plague event, when he returned to the city, Palmer heard similar lamentations from the citizens.
Palmer opened his eyes, gripping Bologue’s shoulder firmly, halting his advance.
"Right here," Palmer bowed his head, looking at the spot where the three stood, "Right here in the depths of the underground."
Bologue didn’t hesitate at all, plunging the teeth into the ground, and after a brief pause, the ground split into a cross-shaped fissure. The bricks didn’t crash directly into the layer below but instead rose up in all directions, piling up into tall mounds.
This operation was special, not just to kill enemies but to save those poor souls as much as possible. Bologue hoped his brute force breakthroughs wouldn’t lead to the deaths of more innocent people.
Olivia took over Bologue’s tasks, her combat far less efficient than Bologue’s. The Shadow Blade hacked chaotically, chopping nearby Bloodthirsty into minced flesh, painting a grotesque trail of blood on the walls and floor.
Sniffing the congealed blood scent, Olivia couldn’t help feeling a strange sense of satisfaction. She briefly indulged in that sweet sensation, then snapped awake, her eyes filled with disgust.
As if punishing herself for indulging in the blood, the Shadow Blade cut into Olivia’s wrist. Though the wound healed in seconds, the sharp pain still penetrated her mind, alerting Olivia.
"Let’s go."
Bologue gazed at the massive cross-shaped scar on the ground, speaking while leaping directly into the dark pit’s bottom.
Palmer, as always, closely followed, but this time his expression was far more solemn. Even if he stopped his environmental reconnaissance, the endless lamentations still echoed in his mind, impacting his mental state.
In a trance, Palmer recalled a story he encountered as a child, where a Prophet wished to the Devil to become an entity that knows everything.
The Devil didn’t refuse the Prophet but hoped he would ponder the fact that all power comes at a price.
The Prophet didn’t hesitate and stubbornly reiterated his wish, and this time the Devil didn’t persuade further, directly granting him omniscient and omnipotent power.
Instantly, the Prophet comprehended the past and future, understood the meaning of all existence. Those carefully hidden secrets were laid bare before his eyes, every person’s most sordid, vulnerable thoughts also fully exposed.
