Endless Debt Chapter 1011 - 91: Death Loop_4
"What followed was quite simple. The team members trusted me, and through time reversal again and again, I led them to resist repeatedly until the timeline was on the verge of collapse. At that moment, I succeeded.
Geoffrey and I thwarted Red Dog’s plan and almost assassinated him. The war was nearing its end, and most of my friends were already dead.
I witnessed their deaths multiple times. Sadly, I couldn’t save any of them. Any fewer sacrifices and the outcome would have been different."
Lebius maintained that indifferent demeanor, not allowing himself any emotional fluctuation.
"After the timeline disorder, the second team completely lost its capability to operate as an independent group and was thus disbanded, with the remaining members reassigned to other action groups or transferred to other departments."
What Lebius narrated wasn’t much, but it was enough for Bologue to understand what happened during that period.
Silence engulfed them once again. After a long pause, Lebius mumbled.
"I refuse to negotiate with the King’s Secret Sword. They must still be plotting something, just like before," Lebius’s voice turned stern, "I must kill Red Dog, not only to win the bet but also for revenge."
After saying all this, Lebius collapsed onto the bench, as if drained of all strength, while Bologue fell into prolonged silence.
Bologue seemed to understand Lebius’s meaning, "Do you think you’ll die, Chief?"
"Who knows? I’m just a group leader. I cannot overturn the Decision Room’s will, and I don’t know what reckless actions I might take next."
Lebius said, "I’ve pondered in the dead of night, maybe I’ll maintain self-restraint, obey orders, or maybe I’ll be consumed by the flames of revenge and choose to assassinate Red Dog again during negotiations, which would undoubtedly betray the Order Bureau."
He raised his hand to cover his eyes, rubbing vigorously, "I thought I was a rational person, but it’s hard to avoid losing control... I’ve already started to lose sight of right and wrong, Bologue, just like I don’t know how I should choose."
"Do you want me to remind you?"
"Perhaps. I’ve been blinded by hatred, but I still have some reason left, though it’s not enough. God knows what I’ll do when I see Red Dog, so I need you by my side.
If I’m wrong, stop me. If I’m right... then take over for me."
Lebius praised Bologue, "You’ll be a good leader."
Bologue didn’t know what kind of emotion to face Lebius with. Lebius saw Bologue as a safeguard. Bologue looked up at the sky and muttered to himself.
"Everyone desires others to know their inner world, yet fears exposing their vulnerable side. Under this contradictory mindset, the scrutiny of others’ gaze is terrifying, as if it brings shame and anger upon oneself. I used to be the same."
"So?"
Bologue praised, "So I feel you’ve gotten a bit closer to me, Chief. You were always behind the desk, unreachable, but now I feel you are right beside me, not as perfect as imagined, but with flesh and blood."
Lebius smiled upon hearing this and said no more. He appeared calm and restrained, but only Lebius himself knew the extent of the fury occupying his heart.
Protection·Eternal Labor not only granted Lebius perpetual clarity but also made his intense emotions vividly apparent. Even events from several years ago seemed like just yesterday.
Geoffrey had said that he considered himself a weak person, having lost so much in the secret war. Yet many years later, Geoffrey’s hatred diminished with time, and he resented himself for being that way.
Thinking of this, Lebius felt a wave of gratitude. This curse kept Lebius relentless, yet it also never weakened his hatred.
Geoffrey emerged from the secret war, but Lebius did not. He was still trapped in that death-loop-like timeline, and only killing Red Dog could set him free.
