Endless Debt Chapter 1009 - 91: Death Loop_2
Bologue’s expression was somewhat complex; it was hard to imagine that Lebius had such a past.
"Alright, I’m just joking. I’m not that foolish. Kids like us, who have no one to rely on, always mature quickly. After weighing the pros and cons, I realized the danger involved. I was about to refuse, but Geoffrey agreed."
"I asked him, are you crazy? These lunatics might send us to the battlefield. But Geoffrey said he was curious about what such a world would be like. He also told me that even if we don’t go with these people, once we grow up, we’d still be kicked out to find a mediocre job and live a mundane life. Maybe we wouldn’t even have a mundane life and just end up dead on the streets."
"He said it was a rare opportunity."
Bologue asked, "Did Geoffrey change your mind?"
"No, people like us are stubborn, aren’t we? How could he persuade me? But then I thought, if Geoffrey left with them, I wouldn’t have any friends. I didn’t have many friends there."
Lebius said self-deprecatingly, "I didn’t leave with them because of a surge of hormones and foolish ideas. Instead, I was afraid of being lonely, so eventually, I chose to go with them."
"And what happened after that?" Bologue asked curiously.
"After the regret, life unexpectedly improved. The extraordinary world is indeed fascinating, constantly refreshing my understanding. Besides Geoffrey, I made more friends. Like the growth stories on TV, we studied, trained, grew, got hired, and even became colleagues, serving together in the second group."
"Geoffrey, Yas, Ivan, and I were all employees from the same batch and were part of the second group. During the secret war, we fought side by side against the King’s Secret Sword."
The beautiful memories ended, and Lebius’s words grew heavy.
"Usually, the Order Bureau doesn’t disband an operations group unless the group is so severely damaged that it can’t be rebuilt. In such cases, the Order Bureau dissolves the group, preserving its sequence as a memorial, and the remaining members are scattered into other groups or form new ones."
Lebius revealed his true feelings with a touch of sadness, "The second group was shattered in the secret war. My leader died in battle, and my friends fell one after another. In the end, only a few of us survived."
Bologue sensed the subtlety of the conversation and directly asked, "Why are you telling me this now? It can’t just be that I made you recall the past, right?"
Looking at Lebius with increasing seriousness, Bologue recalled his forbidden speculation about Lebius back in the Free Port.
The connection between the Order Bureau and the Devil was far more complex than Bologue had imagined, forcing him to let his thoughts wander into the darkness.
"Leader, you..."
Lebius interrupted Bologue, "Bologue, do you remember the conditions for recruiting members in our Special Operations Group?"
"Debtor."
Lebius and Bologue locked eyes, and in Lebius’s eyes, Bologue saw an unextinguished fury, yet his expression was so calm, sending chills down his spine.
Flexing his fingers, Lebius looked at his rough palm and murmured.
"Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s the pain from the secret war that’s kept me going until now, or if it’s the Devil’s protection that prevents me from falling."
Bologue discovered a terrifying secret. Although he had a feeling about it, when it turned from imagination to reality, Bologue’s heart still turned blank.
"Does Geoffrey know about this?" Bologue asked.
"No, only the Decision Room knows about this," Lebius said helplessly. "There was no other choice. Red Dog is an extremely troublesome guy. To deal with him, I sought the Devil’s power, but still, he escaped."
Lebius continued, "Like Aimou, I don’t think I count as a debtor in the traditional sense."
By now, Bologue understood everything. He asked nervously.
"Is it Belphegor?"
Seeing Lebius’s eyes, Bologue knew he had guessed correctly. He continued to ask, "What did you trade with him?"
Lebius was silent for a moment, then shook his head.
"I didn’t make a trade with him."
He added.
"I made a bet with the Devil."
...
Dealing with the Devil inevitably comes with a painful price. Some try to evade this cost, choosing even more dangerous actions.
A wager.
During the secret war, Lebius had bet with Belphegor, and the outcome of the wager would determine the fate of his soul.
Bologue asked, "What did you bet on?"
His mood was like a rollercoaster now, restless with a tinge of latent anger. Bologue knew very well how treacherous the devils were, and he never expected Lebius to have done such a thing.
"During the secret war, I was caught in the disorder of the timeline. Initially, I didn’t realize it until that devil came to me and revealed the schemes of our King’s Secret Swords."
Bologue said, "I always thought you would be the one who never deals with the Devil."
Lebius always gave Bologue a very dependable feeling, as if with him around, any problem could be easily resolved.
