Max learned about the mark system from a terrified devil, discovering it represents a hierarchy within the Godslayer's Pilgrimage. Marks are earned by defeating beasts or participants and can be accumulated or consumed to advance to higher grades like Gold, Sacred, Divine, and potentially Godslayer. The system tempts participants to spend marks for immediate benefits while simultaneously pushing them to accumulate enough for advancement, creating difficult choices.

The devil nodded rapidly. "Yes. I swear. I've told you everything."

Max stared at him for a moment. Then he pulled Dragonheart back.

The devil's expression loosened with relief.

But before that relief could fully settle in, Max's left hand rose. A blue void ring flashed across the air and entered the devil's chest.

The devil froze. His eyes widened in terror. "You said..."

"I said you'd end up worse than them if you lied," Max replied calmly. "I never said I'd let you go."

The void ring tightened. The devil's body collapsed to the ground, his cultivation sealed and his devil energy locked inside him. Max didn't kill him right away. Instead, black flames rose from his palm and slowly wrapped around the two dead devils first, devouring their bodies, bloodline energy, and remaining devil power.

Then he looked down at the sealed devil. "I still need more information before reaching Bloodstone City."

The devil trembled on the ground.

Max's expression stayed the same.

He looked down at the sealed devil beneath his feet and spoke in a calm voice. "Talk properly while you lead me to Bloodstone City, and your death will come quick."

The devil's body trembled. He knew those words weren't a threat meant to scare him. They were a plain statement. After watching two of his companions die in an instant, he no longer had the nerve to test Max's patience. He nodded quickly and forced himself to stand, though his legs still felt weak from fear.

"Alright, alright," the devil said fast. "I'll lead the way. I'll tell you everything I know."

Max pulled the seal back slightly, leaving just enough power inside the devil's body to keep him from escaping or using his devil energy recklessly. The devil clearly sensed it too. His face went even paler, but he didn't dare complain. He turned toward the direction he'd pointed earlier and started leading Max across the pale yellow land.

As they traveled, the devil talked without waiting for Max to ask too many questions. At first his voice shook. But once he realized Max genuinely wanted information and wasn't planning to kill him right away, he started explaining more carefully.

What he shared turned out useful. Some of it matched what Freya and Arvantos had already hinted at, while some of it gave Max a clearer picture of the place he'd just entered.

According to the devil, the Godslayer's Pilgrimage split into three major regions.

The first region was the outer layer. This was where most newcomers landed when they entered the Godslayer's Pilgrimage for the first time. It stretched vast and chaotic, filled with danger, but compared to the deeper regions, it still counted as the safest part of the pilgrimage.

New participants from all five universes usually got scattered across different areas of the outer layer. Some appeared near cities. Some appeared near wilderness. Some appeared near beast territories, ruined lands, abandoned trial grounds, or places where hunters like the three devils waited for fresh prey.

The outer layer was a place of adaptation. Newcomers learned the rules there. They learned about marks, cities, trials, dangers, factions, and the cruelty of the Godslayer's Pilgrimage. Those who adjusted quickly could gather marks and resources before pushing forward. Those who stayed naive usually turned into targets for beasts, traps, old participants, or geniuses from rival races.

The second region was the inner layer. The devil's tone turned noticeably more serious when he brought it up.

The inner layer counted as the main region of the Godslayer's Pilgrimage and also the largest part of the entire place. Most famous trials, ancient ruins, inheritance grounds, bloodline pools, law comprehension zones, body tempering grounds, and mark exchange cities were said to sit there. Almost every genius who entered the pilgrimage dreamed of reaching the inner layer, since that's where the real opportunities started showing up.

"The outer layer has opportunities too," the devil explained as he walked. "But most of them are small. Enough for weaker participants or newcomers, sure, but not enough for the real monsters. The inner layer's different. That's where the geniuses of the five races truly start competing."

Max listened quietly.

The devil continued, "If someone wants to make a name for themselves in the Godslayer's Pilgrimage, they have to enter the inner layer. If they can't even reach that place, then no matter how famous they were outside, people here just see them as ordinary."

The inner layer also drew the most attention from stronger participants because it was dangerous but still reachable. It wasn't like the outer layer, where a lot of newcomers wandered around with no direction, and it wasn't like the core layer, where only the most terrifying geniuses could even step inside.

The inner layer was the great battlefield of the pilgrimage, the place where most conflicts between the five races played out and where countless reputations got built or destroyed.

Then there was the third region. The core layer.

When the devil said those words, even his voice dropped instinctively.

The core layer was the most mysterious part of the Godslayer's Pilgrimage. Legend claimed it was the true center of the entire place, the region holding the deepest secrets and most ancient inheritances.

But unlike the outer and inner layers, the core layer wasn't a place people could enter just because they wanted to. Only the strongest of the strongest geniuses had any real chance of getting inside.

The devil glanced back at Max nervously and said, "Legend says that since the Godslayer's Pilgrimage first appeared, fewer than a hundred people have ever entered the core layer."

Max's eyes narrowed slightly. "Fewer than a hundred?"

That number was shockingly low. The Godslayer's Pilgrimage had existed since time immemorial. Nobody knew who'd created it, when it first appeared, or what purpose it truly served. Every time its gates opened, geniuses from all five universes poured in. The Primordial Universe, Devil Universe, Spirit Universe, Angel Universe, and Dragon Universe all sent their strongest young talents inside.

The number of participants wasn't small. Each opening pulled in a massive wave of geniuses, and over countless eras, the total number of people who'd entered the Godslayer's Pilgrimage should have reached an unimaginable scale. Yet out of all of them, fewer than a hundred had ever reached the core layer.

That made the core layer terrifyingly rare. It also made it unimaginably mysterious.
