Death Notice Book 6: Chapter 51: Spectral Enchantress

~6 minute read · 1,550 words

“Lili…” Little Lian looked pitifully at Lili, whose Law Body had already transformed into a female.

“Boss Hansen invited me. I’ve already agreed to join his team!” Lili turned away with a forced smile.

“You’re going to team up with those people?” Little Lian and Lin Feng exchanged a horrified glance, their faces pale. “Lili, they’ll get you killed!”

“No, they won’t!” Lili shook her head gently. “In their eyes, I’m different from you…”

“Lili…”

“Little Lian, don’t force her!” Hu Fei glanced coldly at Lili, a trace of indifference in her eyes.

After Joey had thrown her to the Zombies, she could no longer trust other prisoners. Even if Lili moved to Tyrant City with Little Lian, Hu Fei would secretly push her out of the team.

Seeing the coldness in Hu Fei’s eyes, Lili’s resolve hardened completely. Her earlier hesitation vanished as she smiled and patted Little Lian’s slightly chubby, round cheek. “Live well. We’ll meet again someday.”

“Little Lian, Lin Feng, it’s time for us to go!” Hu Fei said softly. “Lord Wolf, thank you for this time!”

“No trouble. Their foundations seem decent. They can join your rookie group from now on.” The male Elf beside Hu Fei chuckled as he stood up. Just as he reached the booth door, he remembered something and turned back to Little Lian and Lin Feng. “By the way, before you leave, remember to say goodbye to your old team. Avoid causing disputes between groups.”

“Us? We don’t belong to any team!” Lin Feng and Little Lian exchanged puzzled looks.

“No team? Then those ‘bosses’ you mentioned earlier…” Wolf raised his beautiful white eyebrows in mild surprise.

“My Lord, don’t mind those bosses they spoke of. They’re just a few rookies who entered Shattered Starry Sky with us!” Hu Fei frowned, explaining flatly.

“Ah, I see.” Wolf gave Hu Fei a knowing smile, guessing the beautiful doctor likely had conflicts with those men. He pulled the door open to leave, but the handsome Sun Elf suddenly froze. Something flashed like lightning through his mind.

Thud! Wolf closed the door again and slowly turned around, his expression grave as he looked at Lili. “Miss, did you just say that one of your bosses named Hansen participated in the Metropolis Domination War? And he’s also a newcomer who entered Devil’s Horn at the same time as you?”

“Boss Hansen? Y-Yes!” Lili looked at Wolf, hesitating before nodding. “Not just Boss Hansen; he said three bosses participated in the Metropolis Domination War. But I don’t know the details…”

“Oh, really?” Wolf returned to his seat, leaning in with interest. “Are they still alive?”

“Of course!” Lili stared at Wolf in surprise, confused by his question.

“Hu Fei, I recall you entered Shattered Starry Sky a little over three months ago.” Wolf’s eyes sparkled sharply, half-questioning, half-muttering. “Subtracting the two weeks for the Metropolis Domination War… so the three bosses they speak of have experienced, at most, four or five Quest Worlds…”

“Four or five Quest Worlds, already became Professional Apostles, qualified for the Metropolis Domination War, and survived…” A flush spread across Wolf’s handsome face as he looked up at Lili. “Those bosses of yours… they haven’t joined any major team, have they?”

“Sorry, I don’t know much about our bosses.” Lili narrowed her eyes, slowly backing toward the door. “I have things to do. I should take my leave.”

Just as Lili turned, she found Wolf standing before her. The male Elf had somehow teleported from the sofa to block her exit.

“Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you.” Wolf smiled placidly. “Seeing as you haven’t formed a team yet, telling me about them isn’t betraying anyone. How about this: twenty thousand Shattered Crystals? Consider it payment for information!”

“No, I can’t say!” Lili paled, turning to send a pleading look at Little Lian and the others.

Their expressions shifted upon seeing Lili’s distress. Lin Feng averted his eyes, conflicted. Little Lian anxiously tugged Hu Fei’s sleeve. “Sister Hu Fei…”

“Lord Wolf, don’t trouble her. She won’t tell. If those people find out, death would be the easiest escape.” Hu Fei sighed. “I don’t know about their time in Shattered Starry Sky, but I can tell you about before they entered… My Lord, believe me, they are not suitable team members!”

After a moment, Wolf frowned pensively. “They were Serial Killers from your world? By your account, their mental states were severely compromised?”

“Yes. Their thoughts and values were completely different from normal people’s. Especially the ‘Dissector’—other than his human shell, he was nothing but an emotionless, beastly creature.” Hu Fei smiled bitterly. “You might not believe it, but after all this time, I no longer harbor thoughts of revenge.”

“An emotionless intelligent being?” Wolf blinked, then laughed softly. “I’ve never met an Apostle like that. Did he truly kill his parents?”

“Adoptive parents. The specifics are unclear. Rumor is he suffered abuse from the adults. He was only eight—it broke him psychologically.” Hu Fei deflected vaguely, unwilling to discuss Qin Lun further.

“By human life cycles, eight is a child, yes?” Wolf asked curiously. “How did he kill two adults?”

“I know a little about that,” Lin Feng offered eagerly, hoping to please. “I saw the case file. His foster parents’ autopsies detected a toxin in their systems—some sort of rat poison… Adults unable to fight back were little different from slaughtered pigs.”

“Very well. If they’re that dangerous, we needn’t recruit them.” Wolf sighed regretfully, finally abandoning the idea of recruiting the killers.

Under a pitch-black sky, the District 91 Base stood like the colossal carcass of a primeval beast against a rugged, rocky desert. The base exit, mid-air, resembled the beast’s gaping maw.

This Earth Federation research base was utterly desolate. Removable items had been stripped by the Lu-Lu Tribe. As for the Zombies, once their Soul Power Crystals were extracted, their corpses were dragged away by desert scavengers. Now hollow and silent, the base felt like a tomb for ghosts.

Suddenly, two dark, hazy figures emerged from the base exit. Bathed in faint, soft moonlight, they leapt from the exitway, landing nimbly on the outer walls of District 91 Base and descending to the ground.

“So this is Shattered Starry Sky?” One shadow murmured in a velvety, sweet voice laced with a slight nasal drawl, gazing up at the faint moonlight.

“Lady Mei, we’ve confirmed Shattered Starry Sky exists. Can you let me return now?” The other figure asked timidly—a female voice tinged with fear.

“Return? Hehe, Junko, you’re too naive.” The shadow called ‘Lady Mei’ instantly pressed against her companion’s back, rubbing her body lightly against the other’s spine as she breathed softly, “With your timid personality, I doubt you were his type… no wonder he didn’t turn you into a Skeletal Angel.”

“Lady Mei… are you breaking your promise?” Junko trembled, visibly terrified of the person behind her.

“Hehe, I didn’t break it. But once we turned from Reincarnators into Apostles… we can’t go back!” Lady Mei’s eyes glinted strangely as she took Junko’s earlobe into her mouth, letting out soft, giggly breaths.

“Can’t go back…?” Junko’s face drained of color. “How foolish of me. Someone of your rank must have known! You knew this would happen! Why… why pull me in with you?”

“Hehe, you’ve seen him. You’ve received his aid. For whatever reason… if he learns you became an Apostle, he might come looking.” Lady Mei giggled impishly. “Besides, I need an assistant. I can’t trust my underlings. Only you fit.”

“If you hadn’t threatened to kill my friends, I’d never help you.” Resigned to never returning to Space, Junko calmed down, her voice turning icy. “Why would I keep helping someone called ‘Spectral Enchantress’?”

“Spectral Enchantress… Hehe, know why people call me that?” Lady Mei flickered closer. Her hands snaked under Junko’s arms, grabbing her breasts roughly and kneading them.

“Because the word ‘Mei’ is homophonic with ‘Charm’… ‘Spectral Enchantress’ was originally ‘Ghostly Charm Mei.’ I know you’re not someone ungrateful… so you will help me…” Mei leaned closer to Junko’s ear, whispering a few words.

“… You!” Junko’s pupils dilated as Lady Mei spoke. Her breathing quickened. “Just a name! Why believe it’s him? Many share the same name!”

“True, many do. But only he crafted a dagger into curved scissors!” Lady Mei released Junko, squinting up at the night sky. “Who knew? I only wanted intel on Shattered Starry Sky… and stumbled upon news of him… Hehe!”

In the dim moonlight, Lady Mei’s features bore a striking resemblance—five or six parts similarity—to Qin Lun. But where Qin Lun was plain, Mei resembled a stunning, doll-like anime heroine.

“Hehe… I can finally see you again.” Lady Mei’s eyes shimmered, twin tears tracing her cheeks even as her lips curled into a snarling whisper, “I hated your past choice. You can never take my place.”
