The agent entered the laboratory. He first waited in the preparation room for a while, then said, "Lady Aisley, may I come in?"
"No problem," Pamela said, "I’m not dealing with any hazardous materials, you don’t need to wear protective gear."
The agent pushed the door open and went in. He saw Pamela sitting at the lab bench writing something. He asked, "Where is Area B?"
"Over there in the back," Pamela pointed in a direction and then said, "What are you doing there? Those are all Stark’s things, there might be hazardous materials."
"He asked me to get something for him," the agent said, "It’s a blue box with a white label, do you know what that is?"
"The blue boxes all contain the Extremis Virus," Pamela said, "But he’s quite careful about lab safety, they’re well sealed, just hold it steady. And this stuff only works on the human body when injected, skin contact is harmless."
The agent nodded and walked over to get the item. He opened the freezer to take a look, the top shelf was lined with a heap of blue boxes, but the label colors were different, they seemed to be different versions of the Extremis Virus.
Because there were quite a few, the agent needed to search. And since the items were on the top shelf, it wasn’t easy to find inside, so he simply pulled them all out. However, he worried that leaving the cold environment might deactivate them, so he was searching on the middle shelf of the freezer.
As he was intently searching for the label, he suddenly heard some commotion behind him. The agent instinctively turned around and drew his gun, seeing the shadowy figure just as the glass of the Stark Building shattered with a crash, and the shadow was blown out of the window.
Pamela was still shaken, the incident happened so suddenly that she was focused on recording data and almost didn’t have time to react, nearly getting knocked over by the shadow.
"Assassin’s Union?" Pamela asked, "How did they break into the Rebirth Alliance Headquarters?!"
"No," the agent replied, because he was the one who fired, he could feel the weight of the person being hit. Ninjas are usually light on their feet, but not this thing. Besides, it was tall, over two meters, and its eyes were glowing; it didn’t look like someone from the Assassin’s Union at all, more like The Hulk, but the color didn’t match; The Hulk is green, this one was a deep brown-red.
The agent signaled Pamela to step back as he gripped his gun and slowly walked to the window, discovering chaos below, with agents holding back the monster, and superheroes were already surrounding it.
But the agent soon realized that the superheroes were not coming from the headquarters, they seemed to be chasing from the street. This meant the monster came from outside, pursued by superheroes all the way but still broke into the headquarters, maybe the defense was too weak?
Upon closer observation, the agent noticed something didn’t add up. The monster was very strong, seemingly immune to bullets; firearms were ineffective against it, and it could emit shockwaves using some strange radiation that could knock even Captain America’s shield away, and it seemed extremely hot, causing Venom with Spider Energy to not dare get close.
Currently, Superman was blocking its path, preventing it from charging further into the Stark Building, but Superman’s injuries hadn’t healed, making him a bit sluggish; Wonder Woman quickly arrived on the scene, and together they barely held it back.
Before long, Peter also arrived, and the effect of magic was quite significant, quickly driving the opponent back. However, the agent noticed someone who shouldn’t be in this battle - Pepper Potts, standing not far off, shouting something, but too far away to hear clearly.
"What’s going on?" the agent asked, pressing his earpiece.
"You and Pamela stay upstairs," Natasha’s voice came through the earpiece, "Pepper’s ex-husband, Happy Hogan somehow mutated, it seems he’s trying to get revenge on Stark, determined to break into the Stark Building, don’t come out."
The agent understood; the earlier attack must have been the guy mistaking Pamela in the lab for Iron Man. Although the two don’t look alike, Happy Hogan was very familiar with the Stark Group, knowing this lab was only accessible by Iron Man, targeting it was spot on, but unexpectedly the personnel changed today.
Fortunately, the agent didn’t let Iron Man come, otherwise, if the two had fought here, the loss would have been significant.
"Let’s not head down there," the agent advised Pamela, "You’re important now, the whole food production for Fusion Universe Earth relies on you; if anything happens to you, it’s all over."
Pamela wanted to say she wasn’t that fragile, but, not knowing enough about this other universe and unsure of what level of enemy this monster was, if it were something like The Hulk, All Things Green might not be effective, so to be safe, it was best not to go down.
"Why did Happy Hogan mutate?" the agent asked.
"Not sure at the moment, according to Pepper, she only injected him with the Extremis Virus provided by Iron Man, but Happy suddenly burst out, charging all the way to the Stark Building front, even Captain America and Spider Man couldn’t stop him."
"Extremis Virus?" The agent squinted; he sensed something was off. Iron Man had no reason to poison Happy.
They indeed had some friction because of Pepper, and Iron Man might not necessarily remember Happy saved him, but mutating immediately after being injected with the Extremis Virus, isn’t that blatant poisoning? Even Iron Man wouldn’t be that reckless.
And since Pepper had obtained the Extremis Virus to heal Happy, they must have been divorced, otherwise Iron Man wouldn’t have allowed it. Since they were already divorced, Happy posed no threat to Iron Man, there was no need to go to such lengths.
Even if he wanted to create some trouble for him, there’s no need to strengthen him into such a monster; Stark Group is struggling with internal and external issues, needing to stay at Rebirth Alliance Headquarters to ensure safety; creating such a big monster just complicates things further for themselves, doesn’t it?
"Stop Iron Man." The agent reminded, "If those two start fighting, it will be impossible to end it."
"It’s not that we don’t want to stop them now." Natasha said helplessly, "Unless he’s got a vision problem, there’s no way he wouldn’t recognize this is Happy. The opponent using this method to attack Stark Building, Iron Man will not let it go."
The agent forcefully closed his eyes. If Iron Man kills Happy, he and Pepper will definitely fall apart. Pepper may not have true feelings for Happy, but she would never allow Iron Man to fool her like this. If she tolerates such things, she would completely lose the initiative in their relationship. Pepper cannot accept such an unequal relationship.
Moreover, this is irreparable. Pepper would inject Happy with the serum, because she trusts Iron Man, believing he wouldn’t tamper with it. As a result, her trust is betrayed. The saying goes, once unfaithful, never useful again; this applies not only to emotions but also to exchanges of interests.
They had agreed to divorce and then save Happy, but went back on their word and blatantly broke their promise. Who would dare to make a deal with such a person? It’s not just Pepper, but also the Rebirth Alliance that wouldn’t dare.
Anyway, Happy once saved Iron Man. Even if he wasn’t the current Iron Man, at least for appearances, he should not be so ungrateful. Otherwise, even if Rebirth Alliance wanted to secretly collude, the righteous superheroes would not agree. They would not wish to work with such an ungrateful villain.
The agent sighed deeply. From the lab accident to Happy’s mutation, everything seemed to be pushing Iron Man to oppose the Rebirth Alliance. It seemed like he wouldn’t be finished until he became the greatest opponent of this superhero organization.
Sure enough, the agent and Pamela standing upstairs saw Iron Man flying out of the window. At the moment he saw Happy, he first froze, then became furious.
Iron Man was convinced that the serum he gave was problem-free. Now, with Happy attacking in this manner, isn’t it just the case that he was just saved and now being ungrateful? Can he tolerate this?
Even if he disregarded face, to win over Pepper, Iron Man must defeat Happy. If he is defeated by Happy, then the Stark Group and Pepper would end up under the Hogan name, so Iron Man rushed up without another word.
Natasha took her hand off the earpiece, turned her head and asked Nick: "What do we do now?"
"We made a big mistake." Nick stood in front of the desk, frowning deeply and said, "You can’t win by resisting fate."
Natasha sensed that he did not seem to want to give up but was implying something more. Nick continued, "One accident, if it doesn’t work, then try again. If this time doesn’t work, there will be another. As long as we don’t follow the path of fate, accidents will never stop."
"Inform Thor." Nick stood up and said, "Officially arrest Tony Stark and Harold Hogan, send Hogan for a mental evaluation, don’t let him come out... Tony Stark to court."
When the thunder descended above the headquarters, Iron Man subconsciously took two steps back, but it was too late. The divine power chain tightly bound him, and with a flick of Thor’s wrist, he was knocked out, rolling on the ground, dazed and confused.
Previously exhibiting great might, Happy seemed suddenly choked by the air and also fell to the ground. Thor extended his hand, the divine power chain bound him too, and pushed him to the ground.
Natasha led the agents rushing out, first putting Happy on a stretcher and sending him to the ambulance. Iron Man, on the other hand, was taken away by another group and sent to the Rebirth Alliance’s interrogation room.
"It wasn’t me!!!" Just as Nick walked to the interrogation room door, he heard Iron Man’s roar, "How could I use the Extremis Virus to poison him?! I’m not that stupid!!! And I have no reason to do so!!!"
Nick pushed the door open and went in, and Iron Man looked like he saw a savior: "Nick Fury, do you also believe that I poisoned Happy, causing his mutation?! This is simply absurd! Ridiculous!!!"
Nick just stared at him without speaking. The silence of the King of Special Agents always carried weight, and Iron Man went from arguing to shouting, and finally to silence, all in a matter of seconds.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Iron Man was a bit confused because Nick’s gaze was very complicated, neither angry nor helpless, but contained some deeper meaning.
"You will go to court, Tony. The Rebirth Alliance will conduct a public trial on you." Nick first gave the conclusion.
Iron Man stood frozen in place, he could hardly believe it, then his facial expression twisted a bit. Just as he was about to say something, he stopped in the face of Nick’s intensely pressuring and deep gaze.
"What I’m about to say next, I hope you remember it well. But don’t ask me why, ask yourself."
Iron Man appeared a bit bewildered, not knowing what Nick was going to say, nor what he should ask himself. Then he heard Nick say:
"If this world must have someone who is an enemy to the whole world, you definitely wouldn’t want that person to be you, neither do we, but no one can resist fate."
"As things stand, it no longer matters how it all happened, your only chance to save yourself is to prove that you and we are merely protecting this world in different ways."
"Repetition is not without benefits, everything will be destroyed, then reborn. We can’t resist fate, but we can use it—you can use it too."
