"The Court of Owls has evacuated?" Magneto frowned, "How did they move so quickly? They all left before Thor could get there?"
Mystique nodded and said, "That’s what the news from the Assassin’s Union says. They are also surprised by the Court of Owls’ swift actions, believing there must be someone talented advising them."
"A bunch of fools." Magneto sat down, adjusting his cloak, and said, "If they escape beyond the Nine Major Kingdoms, they would really fall into enemy hands."
"How did they manage to escape?" Mystique asked, puzzled, "Could it be that they turned to the Three Great Empires? But they have no connections with the Three Great Empires and can’t offer any decent tribute, right?"
"That’s why I say they’re stupid. Such secret societies believe that because they can create storms in human society, they can also rely on intrigue to win in the cosmos. It’s too naive."
"You mean they’ve been tricked?"
"Of course." Magneto nodded slightly, "They don’t have the conditions to survive in the universe. Once they go into Outer Space, they will be at the mercy of others. Thor might kill them, but he might also consider their celebrity status and let the Rebirth Alliance handle it privately. They’ve doomed themselves by just fleeing beyond the Nine Major Kingdoms."
"Then where is the mother module?" Mystique stepped forward, asking anxiously, "They left, surely they didn’t take the mother module with them, right?"
"It’s possible." Magneto’s face turned serious, he mused, "If the mother module was moved into the cosmos, we currently don’t have the manpower to search for it."
"But we are constantly facing attacks from the Sentinel Robots." Mystique furrowed her brow in frustration, "A new Bane-type robot appeared and injured several of our people. If not for the X-Men’s quick rescue, we might have been done in there."
"Go tell the Assassin’s Union that we agree to their conditions." Magneto tapped the table lightly, pondering, "We will find a way to eliminate Hydra’s forces in the Americas so they can settle in smoothly, but they must locate the mother module’s location and destroy that damned factory."
"Mutants?!" Selina looked at her subordinate in surprise, "Why would mutants go to clear out Hydra’s base? What did we do to them?"
"I don’t know." The subordinate’s face was pale, "The Eastern and Southern bases have been shattered by that madman Magneto, and the personnel at the Western Base have all defected."
"Damn it!" Selina gritted her teeth.
At this moment, the original person in charge rushed in with a team. He barely had time to scowl before Selina drew the gun from her thigh and shot him in the forehead with a bang.
"From now on, I am taking over the American Headquarters!" Selina looked around with icy eyes, "You all should know, under the current circumstances, internal strife will only accelerate our destruction."
"Are we not evacuating?" another subordinate asked, "The organization in Forward York City is likely unsustainable. If we leave now, at least we can preserve some active forces."
"Of course we have to leave." Selina said, "I’m not stupid; if we don’t leave, I’ll die here too. But don’t forget, the Rebirth Alliance has already captured our people, and they might have already talked. If we evacuate on a large scale now, we’ll definitely be blocked by Rebirth Alliance agents."
"This idiot..." Selina looked down at the leader lying on the ground, "He wanted to blame all this on me, but in reality, it was because he never separated the base’s intelligence. Otherwise, we could have pushed the most powerful Western Base out as a shield, and the headquarters wouldn’t be so passive!"
This reasoning clearly convinced those present; after all, they were agents and knew full well. Spies understand how important one-way communication is; some information must not be leaked.
Take this incident as an example: it’s hard to keep the information about the mutant raid on the base a secret, and it’s not surprising that the Western Base would know. But the Rebirth Alliance arresting Hydra spies should have been known only to the headquarters.
Once the Western Base knew about this, they would think that the captured spy would certainly talk, and the Rebirth Alliance’s purge would soon arrive. It made more sense to defect and run first. After all, who can fight against Thor?
In this way, the headquarters becomes very passive; it’s the classic case of whoever runs slower is at the forefront. The Western Base is the most powerful base in Forward York City; once its people run away, the headquarters is left without defense, making their chances of escape very slim.
The Rebirth Alliance isn’t foolish; even if they don’t extract something from the captured spies, they can tighten patrols and closely monitor unusual activities in the city, making it impossible for the headquarters to evacuate so many people.
It’s said that intelligence study is a profound discipline, not something a layperson with no training can easily grasp. Hydra’s strength lies in its deep roots, benefiting from World War II, extending everywhere. But its weakness is the low quality of its personnel, evidenced by the leader of such a crucial American Headquarters not understanding intelligence gathering.
"Now, listen to my command." Selina assigned tasks while her mind raced, each brain cell straining to devise an evacuation plan that would preserve the headquarters.
But she couldn’t make it too obvious; otherwise, defections might occur during the evacuation, putting herself at risk. So, sending off half first was the better option, and the other half could be slowly depleted once evacuated.
"Technical team, start packing the equipment. Leave heavy items behind, take portable ones, especially those storing important data. Communications department, send one last message to the Western Base, informing them of the headquarters’ evacuation, so they can cover..."
"The Western Base is probably already cut off from communication," the subordinate said.
"You blockhead," Selina cursed, "how are we supposed to explain to European Headquarters that our losses are so severe? We can only blame it on the Western Base’s poor defense, sending the message was just to have evidence, to prove that Headquarters had requested support..."
The subordinates didn’t suspect anything and immediately went to carry it out. Selina knew she was completely bullshitting, why did she send this message? Of course, it was because Magneto was attacking the Hydra Base.
Sure enough, as soon as the message was sent, the entire base was hit with a powerful magnetic storm, and everyone was blown away.
Ordinary people would be blown up and then slammed against walls. They’d definitely be dead. Luckily, Selina could fly; as soon as the magnetic storm started, she flapped her wings and shot through the window, disappearing in a puff of smoke.
The mutants seemed to notice this lone escapee and immediately wanted to send someone to hunt her down, but Magneto raised his hand to stop them. Selina didn’t think he recognized her, but it’s very likely that Magneto wanted to go easy, not wanting to wipe out Hydra thoroughly, especially wanting to leave those with superpowers, clearly aiming to cause some trouble for someone.
After slight contemplation, Selina got it. Now the Court of Owls had already roamed the Milky Way, Hydra’s influence in Forward York City was essentially uprooted, so only the Assassin’s Union remained.
Unexpectedly, the Assassin’s Union colluded with the mutants, no idea what promises the Assassin’s Union had made to the mutants to get Magneto to take action. Hopefully, they won’t gain too much.
Regarding the Court of Owls, Selina still felt uneasy. They retreated too quickly and too abruptly, which wasn’t their style, Selina worried it was a trick. After all, the work with Hydra was wrapped up, so she simply went underground in Forward York City, intending to look for traces of the Court’s base.
Selina didn’t really expect to find anyone; she mainly wanted to see if they left voluntarily or were forced out, or perhaps directly eliminated. If they didn’t leave voluntarily, there should be traces left in the base.
Selina wasn’t very familiar with Forward York City’s sewers, she could only rely on her prior experience in Gotham’s sewers, and use her rather precise intuition to feel her way forward.
That’s why being a Flying Thief all these years wasn’t for nothing. Selina had a good sense of direction, she soon felt that something was off between two paths, the distance too far, possibly something in between. She quietly walked to one side wall, reached out, and started to feel around.
Soon she found a loose brick. Normally, this should be a button to open a door, but Selina didn’t dare press it; she was afraid that once opened, it would be a room full of owls. So she took out a small knife, and began prying, prying for a long time, she finally pried the brick free, saw the mechanism behind, confirming it was indeed a secret chamber of the Court of Owls.
She then started prying the second brick, not aiming to punch through the wall this way, but after she pried two or three consecutively, she could see the mechanical structure inside. Selina took out something akin to a stethoscope from her pocket, it was equipment for eavesdropping through walls by using solid sound transmission principles.
As soon as it was applied, Selina heard a familiar voice.
"I said no means no. You’ve applied for a large amount of funding twice in such a short time, what’s going on? The cosmos has been destroyed? Are you planning to become superheroes and save the world?"
"Collectively kidnapped?... Kidnapped to Outer Space? The tricks for cheating funding are getting more creative. Okay, enough. Do you even know our lord is still hanging on the Origin Wall? Where would I find that much funding for you?"
"And what about all that dark energy before? Used it all up? Can’t you use it sparingly?"
"Forget it, why even save those wastes? They chose to go out themselves, nothing to do with you. There isn’t just that one group of elites on Earth. Besides, you’re connected with New York now, try shaking down some rich folks from New York. Just forget them."
"Next time remember, don’t do stupid things with these fools. If you waste our lord’s energy again, I’ll hang you on the Origin Wall too. Hung up."
Selina took a deep breath.
She silently withdrew the equipment, took out her phone, called Natasha, and said, "Check out the coordinates I sent you. There’s a group of residuals from the Court of Owls here with no energy left, come over quickly and clean them up."
After speaking, she found the nearest exit and climbed up. Back in the hotel room, she saw Bruce just hanging up the phone; she punched him directly, hitting him in the chest.
"I wondered why those guys retreated so quickly! When did you join the Court of Owls?!"
Bruce seemed a bit confused, he said, "What?"
However, he quickly caught on, with some doubt said, "How did you know about the Court of Owls..."
They exchanged a glance, staring at each other.
