Days as a Spiritual Mentor in American Comics Chapter 5907 - 4928: Batman Is Not Here (15)
Shiller once again used his old tricks and quickly forced open another house door, where he found a flute made of bone. This thing looked unusual at first glance. However, Brainiac’s game had a flaw, which was not knowing whether the items found were actually used in this task. It could be a simple mysticism item for use in a future raid, or it might be the key item for this mission, but everything had to be judged by oneself.
Initially, Shiller thought this should be the item for the mission, but soon he found a stone slab engraved with special symbols in another room. The symbol was peculiar, but Shiller had never seen it before. This should also be an important item.
Then, in another room, he found a tattered book. Of course, Shiller didn’t dare to look at it, because books appearing in such places are mostly copies of forbidden tomes. The book contained some text, but Shiller couldn’t understand it.
Logically speaking, it was time to take a gamble; if it didn’t work, just wait for the door to open and try one by one. But Shiller truly didn’t have any capital to gamble with; he didn’t have any mystical expulsion methods. If he failed, he might die on the spot.
Thus, Shiller chose to return to the Cathedral, go offline from the original location, and head to Arkham Mental Hospital to find Brand.
Several hours had passed, and the water had mostly receded. However, the areas soaked by water needed cleaning, so operations hadn’t resumed yet. Patients and medical staff had gone back to tidy up, naturally including Edward and Brand.
"I have something to ask you," Shiller said to Brand, "What is this thing?"
Shiller drew the symbol from the stone slab on a piece of paper. Brand’s eyes widened slightly: "Where did you get this?"
"In the game," Shiller said, "What is this symbol? What is it used for?"
"This is the old seal," Brand said, "Simply put, it’s something that can drive away Elder Gods and Outer Gods."
"I’m afraid it’s not that simple," Shiller wasn’t fooled, narrowing his eyes as he asked.
"A particular Elder God and its followers need the corresponding symbol for expulsion; using other old seals won’t be effective."
"Who does this mark correspond to?"
"This should be fictional," Brand said, "I’ve never seen this thing, but it’s definitely not meant to restrain me."
Shiller sighed, "Brainiac is quite crafty." He pondered it a bit and asked, "What do these words mean?"
He wrote down the words he saw on the remnants of the book for Brand. Brand took a look and said, "Fragments of ’Water God Keta Yate,’ it’s best not to read it."
"Then I definitely have to take a look," Shiller said, "Where is this thing in reality?"
"You want to read it in reality?" Brand was a bit shocked, "You got it backwards; shouldn’t you read it in the game?"
"If I read it in the game, I’ll die, but in reality, I have The Nameless Fog," Shiller said, "Even if it records your true name, nothing will happen to me."
"I’m not a demon, where would I have a true name?" Brand shook his head and said, "Gotham University Library, you’re looking for the sixth article. If not, go ask those in the pen pal club if they have it. If they don’t, then it should be in Atlantis."
Shiller first went to the Gotham University Library. Because operations hadn’t resumed, there was no one at the university. He searched for quite some time but only found the first and second articles, which documented things about Elder Gods and Outer Gods.
However, he didn’t contact the pen pal club, but directly called Jason. Jason had been the librarian here for a long time, so he should know the whereabouts of some books. Sure enough, Jason told him that the sixth article had neither been borrowed nor was it in Atlantis; it was kept in a museum in Germany.
Shiller contacted the museum online, using his identity as an arrogant professor, to request a scanned copy of this scripture. That’s the way the human race is mighty, even such books can have a scanned copy.
Shiller took a look and found that the sixth article described a group called the "Drowned," especially an Old Day Dominator named "Bag Shas." He was described as a relative of Ipo Zettel, with a humanoid body covered in black slime, converting undead minions through kissing.
It mentioned that the Drowned seemed to fear light, especially afraid of explosive flashes of light, which would cause them to explode on the spot and then regenerate in another place.
Shiller immediately thought that if the creatures in that house were indeed followers of the Drowned, then flash bombs or fragmentation flash grenades should be effective against them. Unfortunately, neither he nor Constantine had any of those.
Of course, he also knew who had the most of these things. After going back online, Shiller asked Charles to inquire about the location of the agents.
Deathstroke and Agent, though belonging to the North District, were at the northeastern corner, not far from the East District. And in order to complete the mission, they had moved slightly south, not far from the alley where Shiller was located.
"What task are they doing?" Shiller asked.
"Clearing out a nightclub," Charles said, "They take on purely combat missions, completing one in less than half an hour, and they’ve already done three."
"Being able to fight is great," Shiller said, "Arrange a meeting with them for me; I need to trade some equipment with them."
Very quickly, they met on a street in the East District. Deathstroke stopped his car, and the agent stepped down. He asked, "You want flash bombs? To use flash bombs against Outer Gods?"
"This one happens to fear light," Shiller explained, "How many do you have?"
"Not much. Deathstroke doesn’t need to stun them first before killing. I’ve only brought two small ones, and as for fragmentation grenades and incendiary bombs, there’s none." The agent shook his head and said.
Shiller sighed, but soon the agent took out something and said, "If you’re just after sound and light and explosions, this might be more useful."
In his hand was none other than "Diana’s Blessing" — that’s a name based on the naming convention for divine artifacts, usually named after the god who crafted it — the tank’s main gun revolver made by Diana for the agent.
Shiller was taken aback, but he had to admit, compared to flash bombs or incendiary bombs, the sound and light this thing could produce could be considered at a bombing level. No other fault, just loud.
But because this thing is strong, Shiller was a bit worried whether the agent would use it or not. But he quickly realized that the agent would surely be annoyed by it. Agents prefer silent, stealthy infiltration, while this thing is all about killing all enemies, so no one knows you infiltrated.
Moreover, this thing has a self-harming effect; firing one shot at least causes Level 2 hearing impairment and will definitely lead to wrist injuries. The agent doesn’t want to spend a lot of time on healing, and they don’t have particularly good instant recovery methods.
However, for the Bishop, it’s different. Constantine has many healing methods and can presumably create some healing arrays later, so using this gun wouldn’t be a burden.
Furthermore, the one in the house is a regional leader, which means the entire region might be the territory of the Drowned. Even the ultimate leader, the suspected Joker, could be related to the Drowned, making this weakness universal. With this gun, it’d be a lot easier.
"Then I won’t hold back with you." Shiller said, "But I’ve also brought you some good stuff."
After speaking, he gave the agent the fishing net, bone flute, and old seal, and said, "Although it’s still unclear what these can dispel, they should be useful if you run into something."
The agent took them and had a look; their group is indeed most afraid of psyshock attacks. Although there don’t seem to be such monsters in the North District, with the Lighthouse near the sea, it’s hard to say if several Old Day Dominators might crawl up from the sea, so it’s better to keep them to be safe.
They soon parted ways. Shiller returned to the back alley, standing in front of the door, then said to Brainiac, "Pass a Strength check, I’ll just kick the door in."
Brainiac didn’t say much, tossed him a dice. Surprisingly, it was a critical success. Shiller kicked the door in, the door panel smacked the monster’s face, causing it to be dizzy for a moment.
Without even looking, Shiller fired a shot with a "bang."
This gunshot stunned even Brainiac. Because with a "boom," the small wooden house shattered, and the monster standing in the center was blown into the sea.
This was no longer a sound and light deterrent; after this barrage, it’s back to Lalaiye’s hometown.
"Stop, stop, stop." Brainiac said, "It’s a dice-throwing game."
"Guess why Nya likes throwing dice so much?" Shiller smiled.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Shiller fired three consecutive shots, the monster let out a piercing scream, then exploded into black sludge and disappeared completely. In the end, Shiller never even saw what the monster looked like.
However, he himself was pretty badly hurt. His ears were bleeding, his head was dizzy, and his wrist was sprained, definitely causing bone fractures in his forearm and upper arm, and even his shoulder blade was somewhat affected.
Nevertheless, Shiller made perfect use of his injuries. He started knocking on doors in the streets nearby.
"Composite check 1, successful throw."
"Composite check 1, successful throw."
"Composite check... mission ended, stop throwing."
Shiller chuckled. This gun would injure him, allowing him to perfectly embody the Morbid trait. The heavier the injuries Morbid suffers, the stronger his Strength, and the stronger the Strength, the lower the dice point requirements. In the end, there were no requirements; any number thrown would suffice.
Before Brainiac’s patience ran out, he successfully scavenged three streets, practically taking all usable supplies. These magic materials should last Constantine a while.
Upon mission completion, a bunch of construction materials were also provided, along with a magic long-burning lantern and a clue to the ultimate leader.
As a fellow team member, Constantine heard the prompt at the moment of mission completion. At the same time, the cathedral door was opened, with the smell of blood arriving more quickly than Shiller.
Constantine stood up, looking seriously in that direction. Shiller, carrying a gun with his head lowered, walked in. The blood flowing from his ears had soaked his whole shoulder. His other arm’s wrist was severely swollen, barely able to lift.
"God." Constantine hurried over, "How did you get yourself into this state? If the battle was tough, why didn’t you call me?"
Shiller looked up, those desolate gray eyes slowly focusing on Constantine’s face.
"Stay away from me, Mr. Constantine." He chuckled softly, "I think I need to maintain respect for you."
