Witnessing the ongoing duel, Zhang CuiShan of Wudang Mountain couldn’t help but remark, "Shaolin's Seventy-two Skills are indeed formidable."
Song Yuanqiao responded, "While the Seventy-two Skills are potent, they are merely techniques. What truly commands respect are the underlying methods and the Dao."
Zhang CuiShan looked on, clearly intrigued, prompting Song Yuanqiao to inquire, "Have you ever heard of the Shaolin Four Extremes?"
Zhang CuiShan repeated, "The Shaolin Four Extremes?"
"Precisely," Song Yuanqiao confirmed. "There were once the Three Extremes, and later, a divine skill was added, making it known as the Four Extremes."
Yin Liting interjected, "Senior Brother, are you referring to the Nine Yang Divine Skill?"
"Indeed," Song Yuanqiao affirmed. "The Shaolin Four Extremes consist of the Bone Changing Scripture, the Marrow Washing Scripture, the Golden Bell Shield, and the subsequently incorporated Nine Yang Divine Skill."
As Song Yuanqiao elaborated, he cleared the confusion among the junior disciples. The Seventy-two Skills of Shaolin were largely for public display, while these four supreme techniques represented their true martial prowess.
These four ultimate skills were the bedrock upon which Shaolin's unyielding legacy of a thousand years was built.
They were instrumental in ensuring that each generation produced one or two supreme figures, solidifying Shaolin's revered status as the preeminent Sect in the land – the Taishan Beidou.
Our own Master Zhang had aspired to forge similar pinnacle skills for Wudang. However, numerous attempts, such as Wudang's Shaoyang Skill, ultimately fell short.
This Shaoyang Skill is the fundamental internal cultivation method for all Wudang disciples. Its power rivals the Nine Yang Divine Skill; however, its initial stages present considerable difficulty. Once mastered, though, its strength grows exponentially with practice.
This stands in stark contrast to the Nine Yang Divine Skill, which is exceptionally accessible in its early stages but may not reach the same heights as Shaoyang Skill in its advanced phases.
Initially, the disciples of Wudang struggled to grasp this concept. It wasn't until Song Yuanqiao overheard Zhang Sanfeng recounting his early experiences that the true root of the issue became apparent: Zhang Sanfeng himself.
Master Zhang was a true Heavenly Pride, blessed with prodigious martial arts talent from his youth. His adaptation of the Shaoyang Skill, derived from his master Jue Yuan's Nine Yang Divine Skill, was greatly aided by his innate aptitude and existing martial foundation. He could simply skim the initial content and instantly comprehend it.
He then poured his focus into the latter sections, mastering and understanding the advanced cultivation techniques comprehensively, while inadvertently neglecting the foundational aspects. When Zhang Sanfeng later endeavored to refine the Shaoyang Skill,
he had already ascended to the rank of a grandmaster. Consequently, he designed the basics from his own elevated understanding.
Imagine, at that point, Zhang Sanfeng was akin to a seasoned scholar attempting to author kindergarten textbooks, naturally weaving in complex martial theories. This, of course, made the teachings exceedingly difficult for his disciples to learn!
Nevertheless, the advanced components, coupled with Master Zhang's profound insights, brought the skill close to invincibility. This is precisely why the Shaoyang Skill is both notoriously difficult to learn yet immensely powerful.
Now, Master Zhang himself recognized that his Shaoyang Skill was ill-suited for the average disciple. He therefore set out to create a technique with low entry requirements but a high potential ceiling – in essence, Tai Chi!
While Song Yuanqiao was engaged in casual conversation with Zhang CuiShan and the others, his attention was suddenly drawn to the arena. He observed a shift in the combatants' movements, his gaze sharpening as he declared, "It’s starting. The real battle is about to commence!"
As predicted, Master Kong Wen raised his hand, his movements transforming abruptly as he unveiled a palm technique. This method employed yielding to overcome the rigid, delivering a seemingly gentle strike towards Chen Jie that harbored immense power. Chen Jie's eyes narrowed upon recognizing the approach, and he immediately countered with a move – the [Divine Dragon Tail].
An exceptionally fierce technique, it initiated a direct confrontation of power with Master Kong Wen. Although Master Kong Wen employed softness to counter hardness, Chen Jie instantly identified the technique as the Prajnaparamita Palm, one of the Seventy-two Skills.
It was renowned as one of the formidable Mian Palms.
Despite his surprise, Chen Jie's mind remained astute. In that instant, he retreated, creating an opening. Observing Master Kong Wen's momentary vulnerability, Chen Jie recognized the opportune moment to conclude the fight.
"[Kanglong Youhui!]"
With a mighty roar...
Chen Jie unleashed the most potent of the Seventeen Dragon Capturing Palms, directing a fierce strike at Master Kong Wen.
However, in the ensuing moment, a resonant sound, akin to a grand bell, echoed out. Golden light erupted, repelling Chen Jie with a surge of overwhelming force!
