"The lad with the sacks?"
The innkeeper recoiled in surprise and quickly affirmed, "Indeed, indeed."
"Where is his lodging?"
The guard from the Prince Mansion inquired straightforwardly upon hearing this, and the shopkeeper answered, "Up on the second floor, Room Two in the Sky Suite."
On hearing that, Overlord Blade Qi Chun and Chang Xuzi shared a knowing look before gesturing for their subordinates to secure the entire shop's occupants, declaring, "Keep quiet, everyone."
Afterward, Overlord Blade Qi Chun and Chang Xuzi, the former gripping a broad blade and the latter a sharp sword, cautiously climbed the staircase, trailed by a few Molten Furnace Realm powerhouses like the Elders of Art and Calligraphy.
Right then, the team swiftly arrived at Room Two of the Sky Suite.
By the entrance, Overlord Blade Qi Chun lifted his hand to halt them, then leaned his ear to the door, straining to catch any sounds within.
Yet no noise came from inside—maybe the guest was deep in slumber?
Chang Xuzi and Qi Chun traded a look, after which Qi Chun gave a subtle nod. Instantly, a booming crash echoed as Qi Chun booted the door wide, and the others surged inside.
Chang Xuzi was the quickest, bounding straight to the window to stand guard, ready to block Chen Jiusi from detecting the commotion and fleeing through it.
At the same time, Qi Chun bolted to the bed and seized it with a single grasp.
Just then, a quilt lay over the bed, and Qi Chun smacked it down, making the whole frame crumble with a resounding thud!
Still, Qi Chun's face twisted in alarm. This sensation wasn't right—something was amiss?
Qi Chun pulled back the quilt, while in that instant, a few men entered bearing lanterns, swiftly lighting up the space.
Qi Chun drew aside the quilt, gazing at it in utter bewilderment since beneath it sat only a buckwheat pillow, now reduced to powder from his one forceful palm.
Yet absolutely no one lay under the quilt. Qi Chun's features darkened as he bellowed, "He's gone!"
At his words, the room's occupants froze in shock, all puzzled—where had the target vanished to?
Qi Chun scowled and barked, "Fetch the shopkeeper here."
Upon that command, one of them hurried off to seize the shopkeeper. Moments later, he was dragged in, staring at Qi Chun and stammering, "Sir, sir."
Qi Chun fixed a fierce stare on the shopkeeper and roared in fury, "Where is the room's occupant?"
Terrified to the point of tears, the shopkeeper gazed at Qi Chun and stuttered, "H-he's in there, h-he didn't leave!"
Qi Chun's tone grew icy at this, "So where is he now?"
"I-I don't know!"
The shopkeeper teetered on the edge of sobbing; he truly couldn't fathom the person's disappearance. He stared at the vacant chamber, totally at a loss.
"I-I watched him head upstairs, h-he never came back down."
The shopkeeper uttered, on the verge of weeping.
Hearing that, Chang Xuzi turned to the window and flung it open. Had their racket been too much, alerting him to leap out and flee?
With that in mind, he peered out, finding the roads hushed. Chang Xuzi nimbly vaulted to the roof, scanning the area but spotting nothing unusual. The entire county lay still—how could the fellow have slipped away?
Chang Xuzi pondered, a single notion gripping him—this was utterly bizarre.
Reflecting on it, Chang Xuzi creased his brow sharply. This Chen Jiusi proved far slyer than anticipated.
In the meantime, Overlord Blade Qi Chun reached the window too, gazing out and questioning, "Spot anything?"
To that, Chang Xuzi shook his head, "Nothing, though he must remain within this county."
Overlord Blade Qi Chun responded to this, "If he's around, we'll track him down for sure. Luckily, the Sichuan Tang Sect arrivals are due tomorrow. More hands will make short work of nabbing him."
Chang Xuzi's gaze brightened at the news, "Ah, Tang Sect folks are joining as well?"
Qi Chun confirmed, "That's right, and we can't linger much longer. The imperial forces are closing in on Bright Peak."
Chang Xuzi gave a faint nod in acknowledgment, aware that major affairs loomed near. Truthfully, snaring Chen Jiusi wasn't the prime concern; the real crux was assaulting Bright Peak. Its fall could shake the entire realm.
While contemplating that, the pair surveyed the shadowy night, seeking signs of Chen Jie's getaway.
At the same time, amid the gloom, an individual steadily watched the grand inn directly opposite his position.
He occupied a chamber in the facing inn, where no lamps burned, leaving the whole space shrouded in black.
Chen Jie had kept vigil on the room across, anticipating Chang Xuzi's arrival. As an outsider in King Qi's domain, Chen Jie's scouting paled against the locals' knowledge.
Nevertheless, Chen Jie grasped that in battles between forces, intel reigns supreme. Thus, he orchestrated this ploy to identify his precise pursuers this round.
"You're pretty sharp."
While Chen Jie observed the figures on the far roof, a voice sounded. Then, an unattractive young woman entered, munching a chicken drumstick, addressing Chen Jie.
Chen Jie remarked, "I figured you'd foolishly yell for aid."
The ugly girl retorted, "Do you take me for a fool? In your grasp, I'd be secure, but theirs would likely mean my end."
"Hmm, what makes you so sure you're safe with me?"
The ugly girl giggled, "Hehe, since your big brother is Peng Yingyu, old man Peng. Even though old man Peng left the Zoroastrian Sect, his tie to my grandpa endures. For that alone, you won't hurt me or push things too hard."
Chen Jie eyed the ugly girl and stated, "Nothing in this world is that clear-cut. Folks always bend to their gains."
