Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey! Chapter 1 1 Husband, Drink Porridge
Xiantao Village, Mianshui County, Daqian.
Chen Jie rested on the bed inside a rundown yard cluttered with disorder, his gaze blankly fixed on the roof above.
Did he really transmigrate?
Such ridiculous events were the last thing he thought could strike him.
Yet this "fresh dwelling" looked completely barren!
"Husband, you've awakened. Rise now. Yesterday's mess was on me. Try some porridge," a gentle woman's voice announced.
As Chen Jie remained lost in thought, he shifted his gaze and spotted a lady in ragged, mended garments, bare-faced, holding a pottery bowl while entering the room.
She forced a grin onto her features, but it failed to conceal the red, puffed mark on her face.
Su Yunjin!
My spouse!!
In an instant, recollections surged into his brain like waves crashing.
Daqian Empire, outsiders establishing realms... Xiantao Village, a compulsive gambler...
Bits of knowledge emerged, allowing Chen Jie to grasp his current plight.
The body he now inhabited belonged to Chen Jiusi of Xiantao Village in Mianshui County. The household had once prospered; his mother's father served as a celebrated physician locally. Sadly, lacking male heirs and having just one girl, he brought in a groom to sustain the Chen lineage—that man became Chen Jiusi's dad.
Chen Jiusi's father had started as a local fisher. As poverty deepened in his original home, he wed into the Chen line as a groom, aiming to pick up healing arts from the elder healer. Yet the physician clung to tradition, sharing secrets solely with blood kin and barring strangers. The groom lacked the right to pass them down; only those born into the Chen blood could learn them.
Thus, Chen Jiusi turned into the heir to the healer's craft, but fate struck hard—the old man died when the boy was merely eight, leaving Chen Jiusi without the grandfather's healing knowledge.
The Chen lineage's medicinal heritage vanished, though they retained substantial assets luckily. But after the elder's death, Chen Jiusi's father, free from oversight, dove into booze and bets. During one intoxicated bout, he even swam in the river and met his end by drowning.
As Chen Jiusi matured, his mother recalled a betrothal her father had set before passing. It linked to the scholarly elder of the nearby Su village.
At that time, one side descended from a famed healer, the other from bookish roots—a ideal pairing, leading to the engagement.
So, though frail, his mother sought out the reliable scholar, who honored the pact by giving his daughter Su Yunjin in marriage.
Early on, existence proved tolerable. Even sans the healing arts, the Chens owned more than twenty mu of prime fields and a spacious home.
Mrs. Chen stayed vigilant to guide Chen Jiusi, but bliss faded swiftly. Soon, the Su family suffered; their scholar perished in town at robbers' hands, orphaning a mere five-year-old girl.
Mrs. Chen chose to let Su Yunjin care for the sibling to assist. Yet shortly after, her own sickness returned fiercely, claiming her life.
Lacking Mrs. Chen's control, the father's wild traits in Chen Jiusi exploded; he took to heavy drinking and wagering too. On losing streaks, he'd lash out at his wife, sinking to brutal lows.
It took little time to squander the ancestral savings entirely. In the end, they relocated to the decrepit shack where his father had dwelled prior to joining the Chen family.
The previous evening, he pilfered the documents for their final three mu of fertile land from the house and lost them in a flash. Enraged, he guzzled liquor until blackout and staggered back, tearing the place apart in search of funds to recoup his bets.
Discovering no cash and eyeing the empty grain pot, he wildly fixated on his young sister-in-law Su Yunrui, aged five, and recalled tales of city folk paying handsomely for tender girls to groom in pleasure houses for hefty profits.
With that, he lunged for the kid. Su Yunjin, despite her strength, got struck twice by Chen Jiusi, slammed down, and berated, "You vile shrew, I'm your man, my word is law. Dare to oppose me? I'll end you!"
He stomped her twice further, and Su Yunrui darted ahead to shield Su Yunjin, sobbing and begging, "Brother-in-law, cease striking sister, I beg you."
Yet Chen Jiusi glared icily at Su Yunrui and replied, "I strike her over you. Obey now, join your brother-in-law to town tomorrow, and I'll bring you to a spot with plenty of food, alright?"
"Brother-in-law, I refuse to leave."
"Won't comply? Then I'll continue battering your sister. Think I won't slay her?"
"Wah wah, spare my sister, don't hurt her. I'll obey, I'll go. Ruirui heeds brother-in-law, wah wah…"
"Ha, now that's better."
Chen Jiusi, pleased, ruffled the child's hair then eyed the fallen woman, "Why linger there? Fetch water for my foot wash, you useless thing!"
...
Chen Jie pieced together the prior events, a shiver crawling up his spine. What a monster this guy was!
A wife so lovely and kind, but he abused her rather than treasure her—utterly heartless.
Chen Jie branded his past self a total villain.
With that in mind, Chen Jie glanced once more at his "spouse," standing around one meter sixty-five tall, skin pale as snow, eyes wide, clad in rough, sewn hemp attire, yet exuding the poise and calm of noble upbringing.
A lady like her, back in his old world, would shine as a superstar without doubt, and here she was his partner—he'd hit the jackpot.
Chen Jie failed to fathom how his earlier incarnation could lay a hand on such a stunning gem.
"Husband, why the blank stare? Here, take the porridge."
The lady produced a cracked ceramic dish and ladled out a serving of simple white gruel. As she did, the adorable little one nearby gulped loudly.
"Gulp, Ruirui absolutely hates plain rice soup, hates it totally, gulp..."
The lady shot a pained look at her sibling, sorrow flashing in her gaze, but she still carried the dish to Chen Jie.
"Husband!"
She murmured tenderly.
Passing the porridge, Chen Jie noticed the inflamed hand mark on her face and the dark spots on her limbs; rather than accept it, he caught her wrist, making her tremble violently, almost spilling the bowl, her fingers yanking away on reflex.
But no blow followed as expected; Chen Jie instead lifted her sleeve, exposing bruises blanketing her limb.
Chen Jie went quiet.
The lady pulled back, a single tear welling up briefly, yet she pressed on, "Husband, eat the porridge now. Yesterday's error was mine. Once finished, you can escort Ruirui to town."
Her tone held firm while uttering that, though Chen Jie caught the quiver beneath. Right as Chen Jie opened his mouth to respond, she added, "Husband, we discuss after your meal."
Chen Jie let out a breath, clutched the porridge vessel, and as he reached for the utensil, a tone suddenly rang near his ear: Ding~
