Kat and Lily struggled against a monster bird that attacked them while they were waiting. The bird's sharp beak and talons injured Kat and Appoline, while Lily's shadow attacks were repeatedly thwarted by the bird's metallic defenses. Appoline, overwhelmed by pain, blacked out. More birds appeared in the sky.

--- Kat ---

In between getting punished for her various other plans, Kat had managed to remember that little detail from earlier. Appoline had thrown a potion at the bird. It hadn’t broken the bottle, and apparently the paper planes hadn’t gotten to it either... which meant it was still there. Kat could barely make it out amongst the tangled mess of wires. It had sunken in further since the initial throw.

Lily asked, still trying to catch up. The bird was fast. Not quite as fast as Lily, but that might have to do with the fact it was dragging Kat along for the ride. It had certainly made good distance that Lily was now being forced to make up. She wasn’t close enough to properly make out a small glass jar under a bunch of steel. Heck, she couldn’t even SEE the bird right now.

The cloud cover was thick, and only her link to Kat let her have any idea at all as to where she needed to go. Lily also had to be careful of the occasional rock. If the bird hit one of those floating stones its probably the stone that would break. Lily might be in the same category of strength... but she certainly wasn’t in the same weight class in a more literal level. Momentum was still a problem when you were MAYBE five kilograms soaking wet.

Kat sent through a snapshot of her memory that showed where the potion was and even managed to include a great big red arrow in the mental image to ensure that there was no way Lily could miss the location. Lily accepted the image and now had a much better idea of where it was... she just needed to catch the bird. The problem was, it didn’t seem to be bothering with any sort of fancy dodges, it was just booking it away from her as fast as it could manage.

Perhaps it was expecting Kat to just bleed out? Lily wasn’t sure about that, but it was a possibility.

While this was happening Kat wasn’t completely idle. Despite her claims to Lily... she was also using her demonic fire to test the waters. She didn’t dare send them towards the potion bottle, not without Appoline to tell her what that would do. If it exploded or something and took the elf out as well... perhaps ’never forgive herself’ was too far considering Thyme would save her in the end, but it would still feel like a massive waste.

So far, the results were what Kat expected. The bird could grow metal plates basically wherever it wanted. It likely could also take in lightning but that was just a guess. If she tried to get to a sensitive area with her demonic fire, a metal plate would grow to take the fire, and then fall. It was in some ways a perfect counter to her abilities... but surely it was costly.

The problem was that constant drain from her arm. It wasn’t too costly to send out this fire but the real drain was never about that, and Kat wasn’t sure that she would win in a magical endurance race right now. She tried throwing fire at its legs, wings, the side the potion wasn’t on. The bird always seemed to know where it was going, and was capable of using its metal to block the spread.

It was actually more useless if she targeted the body. The bird seemed to be able to generate more of that thread even easier then the metal plates. It simply grew and detached a chunk of tangled wire to intercept the stuff going for its body, so Kat had to be careful there. If it pushed the potion away in an attempt to block her attack then they might not have a way to bring it down.

Kat was debating where to strike next when Lily cut through the clouds, now close enough to see everything. From her current spot, the potion was mostly hidden... but she had a good enough idea of where it was that seeing it with her own eyes wasn’t necessary. Still, she needed to get just a bit closer...

Lily threw out some lower powered paper spells, not bothering to spend much mana on them at all, she just wanted the bird to react. It didn’t, not really, perhaps sensing the lack of mana, the lack of threat in them... but that too gave her an idea. Lily sent off another wave of paper and had her shadow link up to them, following along with one of the planes. The bird seemed to notice one paper plane had a lot more mana in it then the rest and angled away from it to avoid it.

Which was fine with Lily, as from that plane a fist of shadow exploded outward slamming into the bird’s side. It still, ultimately, wasn’t that strong. The first bled a bunch of its momentum against the steel wool and the bird’s extreme weight meant it was barely pushed to the side, and instead, it was the plane that got pushed back... but that had never been the goal.

A serious of hissing and popping sounds rang out as the broken potion bottle revealed it had been acid, or something like it at least. The nearby threads of metal started to burn and the bird let out an almighty screech. Doing so also released Kat who finally wrenched her hand free from the bird’s grasp.

It tried to summon some steel plates but that didn’t do anything to stop the potion, and trying to create more steel wool just gave the potion more metal to spread through, burning away at the bird and likely reaching its actual body. It was quite concerned with the burning on its back and tried to rip away chunks of its metal with its beak. This was fine though, it had spread enough at this point there was hardly any stopping it. The metal was burning up.

The bird was also distracted, and Kat wanted some revenge for what was done to her arm. A small, slither of fire slammed into its eye while it was distracted, freezing mostly just the outer layer of moisture. It wasn’t enough to truly damage the eye, not of a monster at that level... BUT IT FUCKING HURT!

The bird twitched and spasm under the pain. Apparently unable to deal with a bit of damage to its eye. Kat almost wanted to laugh SHE’D had plenty worse in her eye then a bit of ice after all, and this bird was falling out of the sky because of it. Kat simply watched the bird fall. Part of her wanted to take it out permanently... but she had no idea where they were, didn’t want to dive after it... and still really wasn’t sure what WOULD kill it at this point. Perhaps chopping its neck off?

Kat glanced at her arm. It had healed up. Mostly. There was a bit of scarring around the parts where the teeth had been digging in but she could already see those smoothing out as well. It wouldn’t take too much longer before it was healed up. So that was good. Kat looked over at Lily, hovering in the air slightly drunkenly. It was clear her girlfriend was much lower on energy then Kat herself was.

Kat glanced down at Appoline, the elf seemed to be pulling herself together but that big cut on her side was still dripping blood. *
