Xiao San froze.
"And what if they get really upset and cry because they miss you so much?" Su Qinglan continued, tilting her head with a dramatic, helpless sigh.
"How am I supposed to explain to them that my third son abandoned them for sweet golden melons?"
The words hit the little snake cub like a splash of cold water!
Xiao San’s green eyes widened in absolute shock. A sudden realisation washed over his tiny mind, making his chubby cheeks turn pale.
Grandfather! Grandmother!
How could he have forgotten?! Back in the Beast World, he had a massive, loving family! There were his grandfathers and grandmother, his aunt and uncle, and his large group of friends back in the Dragon Beast City who always followed him around when he showed off his little treasures!
If he stayed in the Upper Domain forever, who would brag to his friends? Who would act like a little grandmaster in front of his uncle? How could he possibly leave them all behind?!
Xiao San’s small head drooped as a wave of utter guilt hit him. He looked down at his chubby little hands, his lips curling up nervously.
How could I actually forget about them just because I was eating peaches?! he thought to himself, thoroughly ashamed of his own greedy little heart.
Su Qinglan couldn’t hold back her laughter any longer at the sight of Xiao San’s intensely guilty, dejected little face.
She reached out and lightly tapped his tiny pink nose.
"What are you sighing like a little old man for? Honestly! There is nothing wrong with liking sweet fruits. In fact, I like cubs who are a little greedy and know exactly what they want! There’s no crime in enjoying good things."
"That’s right!" Rong Ye chimed in from the side with a bright, mischievous laugh, leaning his elbow casually on his knee.
"Xiao San, look at your Father Rong Ye! If I hadn’t been greedy for delicious food and brave enough to shameless pitch in, do you think I would have ever managed to become your mother’s beast husband? Absolutely not! Being a little greedy gets you the best things in life!"
Hearing Rong Ye’s wildly proud logic, Xiao San’s green eyes instantly lit up like little stars! The heavy guilt on his shoulders melted away in a heartbeat.
"Of course there’s nothing bad about it," An Mo added smoothly, leaning over with a dazzling, dimpled smile.
He easily scooped Xiao San out of Su Qinglan’s hands, cradling the chubby snake cub in his broad arms while gently pinching his squishy, rosy cheeks.
"If you ever want to come here to eat fruits, your Uncle An Mo can bring you over whenever you like!"
An Mo looked down at the soft little cub, his golden eyes softening into a quiet, fond warmth.
He murmured softly, "Besides, once your Uncle An Mo has a baby as cute and sweet as you with your mother, you can come over and play in this palace as much as you want... just like your father and I used to play here when we were little."
Xiao San’s tiny ears perked up in utter surprise. He tilted his small head, looking up at An Mo with wide, curious eyes. "Father... Father used to stay here when he was a cub too?"
An Mo nodded softly, a faint, nostalgic smile gracing his handsome lips as he seemed to lose himself in distant, long-forgotten memories of their chaotic childhood on the grand estate.
Besides them, the room suddenly grew quiet.
Xuan Long’s tall, powerful frame stiffened instantly. His deep emerald eyes flashed with a complex, dark light, a flicker of raw, unspoken emotion passing through his normally unreadable face as memory pulled at him.
Before the mood could get too heavy, Xuan Long smoothly reached out, taking Xiao San straight back into his own broad arms.
He held his son securely against his chest and lightly ruffled the cub’s soft hair, completely breaking the spell.
"Ignore him," Xuan Long said in his deep, cool voice, shooting a sharp look at An Mo. "He talks too much nonsense."
An Mo let out a dramatic sigh and slouched over, resting his head directly onto Su Qinglan’s shoulder. His soft, silky hair brushed against her neck as he smirked teasingly.
"You’re just afraid I’ll air out all your dirty, embarrassing memories," An Mo whispered loud enough for the whole room to hear.
CLANG!
The temperature in the grand hall instantly dropped below freezing. Xuan Long’s cold, lethal emerald eyes snapped towards An Mo, sharp enough to slice a mountain in half.
Feeling the suffocating, murder-inducing aura radiating from the dragon lord, An Mo immediately zipped his mouth shut with his fingers and locked it with an invisible key, making a dramatic gesture of total silence.
Su Qinglan took in the entire interaction, her eyes sparkling with intense, unbridled curiosity.
She looked back and forth between the two men.
Suddenly, she was very interested in their past! She could easily picture An Mo as a chaotic, dramatic golden cub running around breaking expensive vases.
But Xuan Long?! A tiny, serious, grumpy snake cub?!
The image of a tiny, frowning Xuan Long sitting in a corner acting like a hundred-year-old grandfather was just too much for her brain to handle.
"PFFFFT! HAHAHAHA!"
Su Qinglan couldn’t hold it in for another second and burst into loud, uncontrollable laughter, practically doubled over in her seat!
Xuan Long’s brow furrowed. He reached out and gently pinched her flushed cheek, his deep voice carrying a dangerous, low rumble. "What are you laughing about, Lanlan?"
Still completely drunk on the hilarious mental picture, Su Qinglan blurted out without thinking, "Of course I’m laughing about you!"
The moment the words left her mouth, Xuan Long’s dark emerald eyes narrowed, darkening into a deep, heavy shade of hungry shadow. The air around him turned thick and dangerous.
Su Qinglan instantly froze. The laughter died right in her throat.
Holy crap.
She desperately wanted to bite her own big, filterless tongue! Why did she have to have such a big mouth in front of a notoriously possessive, terrifying snake?!
