Aegis arrived at Rosevale City and bypassed the academy to explore the old quarter. She used her knowledge of the game to manipulate a pawnbroker into giving her an enchanted locket, then quickly answered a street performer's riddles to gain a magical earring. Finally, she entered a hidden courtyard and faced a dangerous trial at the Whispering Door, correctly answering five hidden questions to acquire the legendary Lover's Ring.

Before the imposing iron gates of Rosevale Academy stood Aegis, her scholarship letter a crumpled testament in her damp palm. The edifice was far grander than any digital rendering, its marble walls soaring towards the afternoon heavens, battlements revealing glimpses of distant spires.

[Holy cow. I'm actually here.]

A parade of affluent students flowed past, their academy uniforms impeccably tailored – the young men in navy blazers accented with gold, the young women in identical blazers paired with pleated skirts that likely commanded a king's ransom. Aegis cast a glance at her own weathered attire. At least the Commoner's Locket would aid in her assimilation.

Setting apprehension aside, Aegis moved forward.

"Documents," the guard gruffly demanded.

[Alright, avoid sounding too eager, sir.]

Aegis presented her scholarship letter. The guard's eyes narrowed into sharp slits.

"This is obviously forged." He crumpled the document, as if crushing her aspirations into oblivion.

Aegis could only stare, bewildered.

This guard… he just destroyed her scholarship letter with utter disregard.

"WHAT!?" Aegis's hands clenched into fists. "Why in the blazes would you do that!?"

"Tsk." The guard sneered, his companion adding to the display of arrogance with a smirk directed at Aegis. "Commoner scum like you—"

A third voice boomed, cutting through the tension.

"BAHAHAHA! Did you seriously just trash official academy property?"

A young woman strode towards them, and Aegis's jaw nearly unhinged. She was tall, easily clearing six feet, her physique powerful beneath the confines of her blazer. Fiery red hair cascaded over her shoulders, and lively green eyes danced with amusement.

Aegis struggled to suppress a smile.

[Hello there, Scarlett Lionheart. You look even more impressive in person.]

"That's academy letterhead, you imbecile." Scarlett deftly plucked the mangled letter from the guard's fingers, handling it as if it were tainted. "Observe this seal? That's Dean Whitmore's personal insignia. You've just committed a serious offense."

"W-What!?" The guard's face paled dramatically. "Lady Lionheart, I didn't—"

"Lady?" Scarlett scoffed, an unrefined sound that somehow enhanced her charisma. "I'm as common as dirt. Perhaps even less respectable. But unlike you, even my 'dirtiness' allows me to read!"

She carefully smoothed the letter, nearly tearing it asunder with her formidable strength. Then, a low, appreciative whistle escaped her lips.

"Hold on a moment… A perfect score on the entrance examination. Theoretical Magic, Combat Strategy, Political Histories. My, my, Country Mouse. You possess considerable intellect. And these oafs nearly shattered the dreams of such a capable student!"

Aegis raised an eyebrow but remained silent.

The guard stammered like a malfunctioning water feature.

"L-Lady Lionheart—"

"Still not a lady. Are you having a seizure?" Scarlett casually slung an arm around Aegis's shoulders, catching her completely off guard. The unexpected contact sent a jolt through Aegis's system, a strange sensation in this new world. "Come along, Mouse. Let's get you inside before this buffoon's brain liquefies and drips from his ears, haha!"

They proceeded through the gates as if they held dominion over the grounds – or at least, Scarlett did. Aegis, meanwhile, focused on not stumbling while being unceremoniously guided. Scarlett's arm was a comforting weight, radiating warmth. A faint scent of leather and cinnamon clung to her.

"Thanks for the rescue…" Aegis looked up at Scarlett, her gaze traveling upwards. "Though… 'Country Mouse'? Where did that peculiar nickname originate?"

"Your accent, for one, and… well, your rather understated uniform, no offense intended." Scarlett offered a knowing grin. "Hmm, with those test results… Allow me to hazard a guess: model student, teacher's pet, spent all your free time buried in books rather than actually living?"

On the last point, at least, her assessment was accurate.

"How did you know that?"

"It takes one to recognize one. Well, the honor student part, anyway. My own free time was dedicated to vastly different pursuits." Her grin widened, becoming positively predatory. "Speaking of which, it's better than what they initially dubbed me in my first year. 'Dick-for-Brains'."

Aegis gasped, nearly choking on air.

"WHAT?"

This was entirely new information, a piece of lore Aegis had never encountered, despite replaying Scarlett's dialogue meticulously in the game.

"Because I apparently tended to think with the wrong appendage, ha!" Scarlett declared cheerfully, as nonchalantly as if discussing the weather. "And they weren't wrong, either. I nearly faced expulsion on three separate occasions. It turns out, the library isn't quite as soundproof as one might assume."

Aegis averted her gaze, her cheeks flushing at the vivid mental image conjured by Scarlett's words. Simultaneously, a realization dawned:

[Right. She has the . I knew NPCs could obtain it, just not players. Not .]

Shaking her head, Aegis refocused on the earnest green eyes gazing down at her.

"The library?" Aegis murmured. "How very… scholarly of you."

"I am all for further education," Scarlett declared, raising an eyebrow suggestively, to which Aegis could only roll her eyes.

Despite Scarlett's peculiar escapades, the two entered the academy grounds side-by-side.

The academy unfolded before them, vast and opulent, like the wildest fantasy of a wealthy individual. Lush gardens, presumably tended by a legion of staff, and fountains defying gravity, spiraling water impossibly high. Students were scattered about, relaxing on benches carved from marble.

A grand edifice of white marble and stained glass, the assembly hall stood impressively, adorned with banners representing various noble lineages that fluttered gently in the wind. A throng of students congregated on the steps, largely segregated into groups that clearly mirrored their social standing.

"Is that our destination?" Scarlett inquired, peering at the crowd. "Wow, everyone looks so posh. And furious. Why do nobles always seem so constipated?"

Aegis let out a chuckle.

"Perhaps it's the restrictive attire?"

"Haha! You're likely correct." Scarlett adjusted her blazer. "This thing is already agony. How are we expected to engage in combat dressed like this?"

They merged into the steady flow of students making their way into the assembly hall. Inside, rows upon rows of seats faced a raised platform where faculty members were commencing their gathering. Aegis scanned the assembled students, her heart rate accelerating as her eyes landed on two undeniably familiar figures.

Near the front, encircled by a gaggle of fawning individuals, sat Princess Talia Stone. Her presence alone commanded the attention of the entire room. Her dark hair was artfully arranged in an elaborate updo, highlighting the graceful curve of her neck. Those renowned golden eyes swept across the hall, carrying an air of barely suppressed disdain. Though she wore the standard academy uniform, it was ostentatiously tailored, accentuating her figure perfectly. When a nearby student inadvertently jostled her chair, Talia's glare was potent enough to freeze the very fires of hell.

[God, she's even hotter when she's being a bitch.]

On the opposing side of the hall, Aegis located Liora Vale. The contrast between them was stark. While Talia exuded an icy perfection, Liora radiated genuine warmth. Her blonde curls framed a heart-shaped face sprinkled with charming freckles. She sat by herself, a well-loved notebook clutched in her hand, offering a smile to anyone who met her gaze. Her uniform, though clean, was clearly a hand-me-down, with slightly frayed cuffs.

[The game's main love interest. Sweet and kind.]

"See someone who catches your eye?" Scarlett asked, nudging Aegis playfully, her arm draped comfortably around her shoulders. "That dark-haired girl looks incredibly mean, though quite beautiful! And the one with the notebook... aw, she seems so sweet. Is she lost, do you think?"

Before Aegis could formulate a response, a profound silence descended upon the hall. Headmistress Valdris had stepped up to the podium.

The woman appeared ancient, as powerful mages often do, her true age impossible to ascertain. Her silver hair was neatly secured in a bun, and her robes suggested a wealth far exceeding that of most estates. Her eyes, holding the wisdom of countless experiences, seemed to penetrate the very soul. Her voice, resonating with an unamplified power, filled the space.

"Welcome to Rosevale Academy."

Those four simple words, and Aegis felt as though she were being meticulously examined.

"You are gathered here because you possess exceptional qualities," Valdris continued. "Be it noble lineage, innate magical talent, scholarly brilliance, or—" her gaze drifted towards the scholarship students, "—unique potential. However, merely being accepted holds no value if you do not demonstrate excellence."

She paused, allowing the gravity of her pronouncement to settle upon the attendees.

"Let me be unequivocally clear. Rosevale is not a mere finishing school for the spoiled elite. It is a crucible. You will face trials, overcome challenges, and be pushed far beyond your perceived limits. Many of you will falter and break."

[Here comes the fun part.]

"To ensure that only the most deserving remain, we enforce a strict ranking system. Every month, your performance will be assessed across academics, combat, magical proficiency, and social influence. The bottom ten percent will face immediate expulsion. There will be no exceptions, no grounds for appeal, and no amount of familial wealth can alter this outcome."

A ripple of whispers spread through the hall. Aegis observed several of the noble students visibly blanch.

"This rigorous assessment continues throughout your initial year," Valdris stated, her commanding presence immediately quieting the murmuring crowd. "With each passing month, as the less capable are culled, the percentage of students expelled will decrease. Upon completion of the first year, the expulsions become... more selective. Make no mistake, your first year will undoubtedly be the most arduous period of your lives."

[Yep, just like the game. Survive the monthly rankings throughout year one, or get booted. Good thing I know exactly which classes to take and which professors to butter up.]

"Your classes will commence tomorrow. Tonight, you will be issued your dormitory placements and class schedules. I strongly advise you to utilize your time judiciously." Valdris offered a smile, its edge as sharp as fractured glass. "Welcome to perdition, children. Endeavor to find some enjoyment in it."

She then exited the stage with purpose, leaving behind a hall filled with a multitude of terrified adolescents.

"Well... she was rather intimidating," Scarlett commented softly.

A prefect, his expression contorted as if his mother had just been insulted, started directing students towards the exits.

"First-year students, follow me for your dormitory assignments! No pushing, no using magic, and absolutely no dueling in the hallways!"

Aegis allowed herself to be carried along with the mass of students, stealing one final look at Talia's flawless profile and Liora's serene smile.

[... Not long from now,] she vowed silently. [Not long from now.]

There was no need for haste, after all.

A smile touched her lips as she adjusted the Lover's Ring adorning her finger. The game was poised to commence.

Aegis pushed the two main characters from her thoughts. She would come to know them intimately, in time.
