"I’m sorry, Sylceris," Aegis said. "I tricked you."
Sylceris was rigid in her arms, still dancing because Aegis was leading and her body was following out of instinct, but her dark eyes were burning.
Her jaw was clenched so tight Aegis could see the muscles jumping in her cheeks.
"You tricked me," Sylceris repeated.
"I did."
"Everything. The sparring, the conversations, the—" Her voice caught. "All of it. You were playing me."
"Yes."
"You were never on our side."
"No."
Sylceris tried to pull away. Aegis held her waist, kept them moving, kept the waltz going. Around them, other couples danced, oblivious, the orchestra swelling through the hall.
"Let go of me," Sylceris hissed.
Dialogue options appeared.
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
"Not yet. Hear me out first." [CALM]
"If I let you go, you run. And then people die. So no." [BLUNT]
"You owe me five minutes. After everything we’ve been through, you owe me that." [GUILT]
[Okay, the most important dialogue check of my life. Here goes nothing.]
"Not yet," Aegis said, her grip firm on Sylceris’s waist. "Hear me out first. You can hate me after. But right now, you’re going to keep dancing, and you’re going to listen."
Sylceris glared at her, furious, but she didn’t pull away again. Her hand on Aegis’s shoulder tightened until her knuckles ached.
"Talk," Sylceris said through her teeth.
"I know what it’s like to have nothing. I grew up on a farm with dirt floors and hand-me-down clothes. When I walked into this academy, every noble in the building looked at me like I was something they’d scraped off their shoe. I’m not some aristocrat who forgot where she came from. I remember every second of it."
"Then how can you do this? How can you stand here and protect them?"
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
"Because burning down a system you don’t like isn’t revolution. It’s a tantrum." [CHALLENGE]
"Because there are people in this room who don’t deserve to die for the sins of the system." [APPEAL]
"Because I have a better plan." [CONFIDENCE]
[One. Hit her hard. She respects strength.]
"Because burning down a system you don’t like isn’t revolution, Sylceris. It’s a tantrum. And you’re smarter than that." Aegis held her gaze as they turned through the waltz. "You didn’t join the Umbral Blade because you wanted to kill people. You joined because you wanted things to change, and they offered you the only path you could see."
"It’s the only path there is."
"No. It’s the only path they showed you. I plan to create a new one."
"You can’t just—"
"After the bomb goes off and the nobles are dead, then what?" Aegis cut in. "Evangeline’s gone, Cindergrave’s gone, the Great Houses are decapitated. Who takes power? Who stops the military from cracking down? Who prevents the church from launching a crusade against every commoner in Rosevale?"
Sylceris’s jaw worked.
"We’ll rebuild. From the ashes, we—"
"You don’t have a plan for what comes next. You have a hope, Sylceris. And hope isn’t a strategy."
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
"In your best-case scenario, the only thing you know for certain is that people die. Tonight. You’ve always known that." [REASON]
"You want to gamble hundreds of lives on ’we’ll figure it out after’? That’s not courage. That’s cowardice." [PROVOKE]
"Sylceris, you’re not a killer. You’re an idealist who got handed a bomb instead of a ballot." [EMPATHIZE]
[Three. She’s cracking. She’s falling. Don’t break her. Catch her.]
"Sylceris, you’re not a killer," Aegis said, softening her voice. "You’re an idealist. One who got handed a bomb instead of a ballot. And in your best hopes and dreams, in the absolute best version of what happens after that thing goes off, the only thing you know for certain is that people die. Hundreds of them. Tonight. And then thousands more in the chaos after. You’ve always known that."
Sylceris’s breath hitched. Her eyes were red-rimmed now, her composure fracturing, grief and rage cycling through her so fast Aegis could see each one pass across her face.
"You used me," Sylceris said, her voice cracking. "You fucked me and you lied to me and you used me to get to my people, and now you’re standing here asking me to just—"
"I’m not asking you to accept it. I know what I did. I know how it feels." Aegis pulled her closer. "There are people in this room that I love. My wife, my friends, people who grew up just as broken by this system as you did. People trying to make something of themselves. I can’t let them die. And deep down, I don’t think you want them to, either."
At that moment, the doors to the grand hall opened. Selene walked in, flanked by four church inquisitors in white armor. Her blue eyes found Aegis across the room for just a second before she addressed the crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Selene’s voice rang out, clear and authoritative. "I apologize for the interruption. We’ve received intelligence regarding suspected shadow mage activity within the academy, and as a precaution, I must ask everyone to calmly exit the ballroom. Please proceed to the courtyard in an orderly fashion."
The crowd stirred, murmurs rippling through five hundred people, but the tone was calm.
People started filing toward the exits, couples breaking apart, nobles moving with confused but compliant expressions. At the edges of the room, Aegis’s retainers and Selene’s inquisitors worked in tandem, guiding civilians out while quietly separating the shadow mages from the herd. Fenn was held near a side door, his face pale. Brynn frozen against the wall as an inquisitor approached her. One by one, all of them caught.
Sylceris watched it happen, her eyes darting from operative to operative, watching her people get picked off.
"No, no." Aegis turned Sylceris’s face back toward her. "Look at me. Keep looking at me."
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
"I don’t think you’re a bad person. I never did." [SINCERITY]
"This is over, Sylceris. Let it go." [FIRM]
"You lost. But that doesn’t mean you have to lose everything." [OFFER]
"I don’t think you’re a bad person, Sylceris. I never did. You’re angry, and you have every right to be. The system that conquered your homeland and erased your people is real. That injustice is real. I’m not going to stand here and pretend it isn’t."
The hall was emptying around them. The music had stopped. The enchanted lights still drifted overhead, casting blue and silver across the marble.
"But you lack faith," Aegis said. "You don’t believe things can change without destruction. And, of course you do. Nobody’s ever given you a reason to believe otherwise."
Sylceris’s lip trembled. She bit down on it.
The system chimed in one more time.
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
"Have faith in me. I’m going to change this world. Not by burning it down. By building something better." [PERSUADE]
"I can’t make you trust me. But I can show you what I’m willing to do." [DEMONSTRATE]
Aegis inhaled slowly.
"I can’t make you trust me again," Aegis said. "But hey, I’m going to change this world. Not by burning it down, but by building something better. And tonight, I’ll show you."
She let Sylceris go.
The hall was empty now. Just the two of them on the dance floor, surrounded by abandoned wine glasses and pushed-aside chairs. Selene’s inquisitors had every operative in custody at the edges of the room, hands bound, faces stunned. All of them except Sylceris.
"... What are you going to do?" Sylceris asked, eyes narrowed.
Aegis didn’t answer.
She turned and walked to the center of the ballroom, her heels clicking against marble, the sound echoing through the empty space. She could feel the convergence construct beneath the floor, massive and dense, humming with enough shadow energy to flatten everything within a hundred meters.
She knelt down there.
"Aegis." Sylceris’s voice, sharp with panic. "Aegis, you have to go. When it detonates, you’ll die."
Across the room, near one of the doorways, a figure stood watching.
Long black hair, pink eyes, a sketchbook tucked under one arm. Lune. She wasn’t hiding, wasn’t pretending to be somewhere else. She was just standing there, still and silent, watching Aegis the way she always had.
Their eyes met.
[The home stretch, right?]
Aegis closed her eyes and smiled.
