Qi Taiguo discusses his upcoming dangerous assignment with his remarkably intelligent son, Qi Xiaoqi. Xiaoqi questions his father's motives, suggesting his godfather's brother could simply promote him. Qi Taiguo explains that while connections are important, true advancement requires demonstrable competence and respect, especially in the volatile military, where even emperors face internal threats. Xiaoqi acknowledges his father's wisdom, then advises him to properly persuade Cheng Su.

Cheng Su said that the family dinner was meant to be a farewell for Qi Taiguo, but at the table, no one was very enthusiastic. Even with Qi Jianguo making jokes occasionally, the atmosphere was quite dull.

The meal was tasteless, and Qi Taiguo was helpless about it. He didn’t say much either, lest he make things worse.

After the meal, Qi Taiguo asked his family to go home first, and he pulled Cheng Su along for a walk outside.

"It’s really cold, why not go home?" Cheng Su said.

"I’m leaving tomorrow, aren’t I? About to embark again, why don’t you go with me to buy some medicine and whatnot to take with me?" Qi Taiguo said with a smile.

Cheng Su looked at him and nodded.

Qi Taiguo hurriedly held her hand, tucked it into the pocket of his coat, and the two of them walked silently along the street, not speaking.

On the night of the sixth day of the New Year, it wasn’t over yet. In the distance, people were still setting off firecrackers, and every now and then, a bang would make one’s heart jump with startle.

Qi Taiguo looked at the person next to him, shook her hand, and said, "Susu, can you talk to me? Hmm? When you don’t speak, I feel really anxious."

His tone carried a hint of flattery and caution. Cheng Su felt a soft, sour feeling in her heart and asked, "What should I say?"

"Anything is fine, just don’t be silent. You make me feel extremely uneasy like this," Qi Taiguo pleaded.

"I don’t know what to say either."

"Are you still mad? I’m sorry, I..."

"Don’t say you’re sorry." Cheng Su stopped and covered his mouth with her hand, saying, "You haven’t done anything to be sorry for, so there’s no need to say it."

"Then you..."

"It’s nothing, I’m just being a little stubborn. Please be patient with me. I’m a woman, aren’t men supposed to yield to women? I’m still your wife, after all," Cheng Su said, deliberately ’acting spoiled’.

She said she was a woman, the weaker one, asking him, as the man, to be more patient and give her some leeway, but to Qi Taiguo, it felt as if his heart was twisted into a knot.

He heard the vulnerability and powerlessness in her words, all because of himself.

But the reality was, neither of them could choose otherwise. No, perhaps there was a choice—to give up this identity, to be content with the ordinary and mundane, but could they?

If they could, back then they wouldn’t have been so eager to make progress, constantly chasing after each other’s steps.

In truth, they were alike—both ambitious, unwilling to fall behind.

Qi Taiguo stopped and held her in his arms without saying a word.

Cheng Su hesitated for a moment, then reached out to embrace him as well, the two of them holding each other under the streetlight.

All understood without words.

No blame on you, no fault on you. Keep moving forward; this is the destiny we chose, and no one is to blame.

"When you get to that place, be careful about everything, pay attention, make sure to maintain hygiene, disinfect regularly, exercise more, and don’t let yourself get infected with any virus." Cheng Su said, "No matter what the purpose of sending you there this time is, remember, I want you to live. This is my only request, my only purpose."

She didn’t need him to earn military merits. Since there was no avoiding this deployment, she only asked for him to live, to come back alive to see her.

This was her only aim for him.

Qi Taiguo looked into her eyes and nodded solemnly, "Okay, I promise you!"

"Qi Taiguo, remember, come back alive." Cheng Su stood on her toes and kissed him, tears once again sliding down from the corner of her eyes.
