The family returns from the flower market with New Year's purchases. After settling in and preparing for the night, Cheng Su and Qi Taiguo attempt to get intimate, but are repeatedly interrupted by the sounds of their son, Qi Xiaoqi, stirring in his sleep. Frustrated by the lack of privacy in their cramped quarters, Cheng Su resolves to earn more money to buy a larger house.

On the first day of the New Year in 1990, marking the official entry into the early nineties, Cheng Su was awakened early.

The one who woke her up was not anyone beside her, but her precocious son, Xiao Qi, who wanted to use the bathroom instead of wetting his diaper, something he couldn’t accept.

Cheng Su, her eyes half-closed, resignedly got up to take him to pee, returned to the room, and tried to lie down for a nap, but Xiao Qi tugged at the hem of her shirt and said, "I’m hungry."

Mother and son exchanged glances, and Cheng Su ultimately gave in, yawning as she took out his bottle, made him a cup of milk, and handed it to him.

"Just this?" Xiao Qi really didn’t want powdered milk anymore, although it tasted fine; after all, he’s growing up. Adults don’t drink milk.

"Fill your stomach first. Milk supplements calcium and nutrition and is good for your body. Drink it," Cheng Su told him, "This stuff is precious; children from poor families don’t even get this, so stop being picky!"

She wasn’t bluffing Xiao Qi. Kids from poor families, forget milk powder, grow up eating porridge water and sweet potatoes, and they are not few.

Xiao Qi pursed his lips and started sipping, deciding it was better to drink for his own good and save himself from her nagging.

Only then did Cheng Su nod with satisfaction, thinking that since she was up, and it’s New Year, she might as well wash her face, change clothes, prepare the day’s breakfast, and brew some tea for the living room.

While busy in the kitchen, someone hugged her from behind; Qi Taiguo leaned over her back, "Happy New Year, wife!" and smacked a kiss on her cheek.

"Happy New Year, go wash your face, your breath stinks!" Cheng Su pushed him away disdainfully.

Qi Taiguo slapped her on the butt as he left the kitchen, and laughed a bit when he met his dad outside.

With breakfast prepared, the whole family got up, exchanged New Year’s greetings, Cheng Su served tea to her in-laws, taught Xiao Qi how to wish a happy New Year, and the little one received several red envelopes.

"Today, on New Year’s Day, let’s take a family portrait!" Cheng Su saw everyone wearing new clothes and said with a smile.

"Great, but who will take the photo for us?" Fengping asked.

"The self-timer function will do," Cheng Su’s camera had this feature.

Upon hearing about taking pictures, Father Qi and others specially redid their hair and dressed up, everyone gathering in front of the lens looking more glamorous.

The family portrait was taken, Cheng Su and the others also captured some shots of the three of them, and the couple alone, using up a roll of film.

"When are you going to Cheng family to pay respects for the New Year?" Mother Qi asked Cheng Su.

Cheng Su replied, "We’ll go on the second day of the New Year. Today, our family will go out shopping, watch movies, go to parks, or even shopping malls. What do you think?" she looked at Qi Taiguo.

"Whatever, it’s all up to your arrangements," Qi Taiguo answered.

Cheng Su then said, "I’ll first make a call to Old Master to send New Year’s greetings, telling him we’ll go tomorrow."

The two families weren’t far apart. Just that visiting others on the first day was out of question, so Cheng Su, being a goddaughter, would go on the second day, like visiting her own family.

She called the Cheng family, then her own family to send New Year greetings. Xiao Qi earnestly held the phone and spoke blessings to Mother Cheng, bringing a big smile to Mother Cheng’s face, making her exceptionally fond.

After making calls everywhere to send New Year’s greetings, the family went out together, strolled in the parks, and then returned home for tea and conversations. That’s how they spent New Year’s.
