In response to her self-doubt, Cheng Su simply waited until her parents and family were all asleep to call Qi Taiguo.
Qi Taiguo hadn’t gone to sleep yet and was very surprised to receive her call so late. His first reaction was to ask whether their son was sick or something.
"He’s perfectly fine," Cheng Su replied irritably. "It’s me who has something on my mind and wants to talk to you."
Qi Taiguo let out a sigh and said, "You scared me to death. Getting a call at this hour is really awkward; I honestly thought something major had happened."
Cheng Su said pitifully, "What can I do? You’re the one who’s never at home."
Upon hearing this, Qi Taiguo asked, "What’s wrong? What’s on your mind?"
Cheng Su sighed and said, "It’s nothing else but the issue of who I can ask to help take care of Qi Xiaoqi. I’m wondering, have I made a mistake? I initially said I wanted to be involved in our son’s growth, but now I’m going back on my word. Actually, is this year or next of study really that important to me?"
She had already attended university. Initially, she went to university after being spurred by Hualing’s comment about her being an uncultured nouveau riche.
But is she really uncultured? She just lacks that diploma.
Now, because of this frustration, she’s placed herself in an awkward, difficult situation, changing her original intention. For the sake of her child, shouldn’t she be willing to sacrifice?
"You’re overthinking this, aren’t you? Setting aside your initial motivations for attending university, don’t you often say, ’Live and learn’? It was with this kind of persistence that you got into university. Now, with just one year left, you’re thinking of returning to the family and giving up halfway? This isn’t the Cheng Su I know!" Qi Taiguo said. "Besides, let’s not mention previous years, isn’t senior year more relaxed? Some people even go out to work, right? You can do that too. You already have a foundation, and missing some classes won’t be a problem for you! You can still take care of our son. It doesn’t mean you’re absent from his growth!"
That was true; Cheng Su realized she had been thinking in circles, caught in a loop!
"You don’t know, when I see Xiao Qi’s little eyes, I always feel I’ve owed him so much." Cheng Su chuckled softly.
Upon hearing this, Qi Taiguo felt a slight pang in his heart and said, "If we’re talking about owing him something, it’s me who has let him down. He was only a few months old when I was transferred here, unable to be with him as he grows. As a father, I’m unqualified."
"Nonsense, you’re a soldier; military orders are unyielding, and you’re unable to change those decisions," Cheng Su immediately replied. "He wouldn’t dare blame you; if he does, I’ll scold him. Daddy is the most wonderful person, defending the country, a true hero!"
Qi Taiguo was warmed by her words and laughed, "Then praise me more in front of him, saying there’s no one like me in heaven or earth, or else, when we reunite in the future, I think he’ll resent me!"
"Don’t worry! Your son is very sensible." Cheng Su smiled playfully, "I even had a long talk with him."
"Oh?"
Cheng Su recounted her conversation with their son, saying, "Whether he was pretending or not, I acted as if he understood!"
Qi Taiguo was silent for a while and said, "No matter what, he’s our son. Regardless of whether he understands or not, he’s just a little more than a year old. Don’t be too harsh on him!"
"It’s strange. Aren’t you supposed to be the strict father? How come it seems you’re the stern one less often, while I’m the soft one more?" Cheng Su raised an eyebrow.
"Perhaps it’s because I’m not by his side; I miss him a lot!" Qi Taiguo said rather wistfully.
Cheng Su comforted him with a few words, discussed her idea of having Father Qi stay over, and then hung up the phone, sat idle for a while, and finally rested and went to sleep.
