Just because she said something wrong, Mother Qi was resisted and disliked by Qi Xiaoqi. No matter how she tried to amuse him, he simply wouldn’t show her any affection.
This left Mother Qi feeling very defeated and angry. She was more convinced that Mother Cheng and Cheng Su had taught Xiaoqi to reflect poorly on her, not knowing how many bad things they might have said behind her back. It strengthened her resolve to personally take care of Xiaoqi.
If this continues, she’ll have nowhere to stand as his grandmother. It’s clearly her grandson, yet he seems more like a Cheng.
After seeing off Qi Fenglian’s family, Mother Cheng and Cheng Su began cleaning and washing dishes in the kitchen, whispering to each other.
"...About what I said before, regarding why you don’t celebrate the festival at your place - do you understand now?" Mother Cheng pursed her lips and said, "Your mother-in-law thinks the same. Even if it was said unintentionally, who knows if she’s dissatisfied."
"Mom, don’t bother with whether she’s satisfied or not, just stay here. You’ve helped me take care of Xiaoqi for so long, from when I gave birth until now. Even if there’s no credit, there’s effort. What’s wrong with spending a holiday here? If anyone dares to object, they can come to me." Cheng Su snorted lightly.
Mother Cheng sighed and said, "You’re just stubborn. I saw your mother-in-law brought quite a bit of luggage over, suggesting she might be planning to stay long-term. Her legs seem much better too; she might be thinking of taking care of Xiaoqi."
Cheng Su paused in washing dishes, frowning deeply.
"If your mother-in-law says she wants to help with Xiaoqi, let her try. After all, she is his real grandmother and won’t be negligent." Mother Cheng said.
Cheng Su thought about the scenario and felt annoyed, saying, "Let’s see, Xiaoqi might not even want her to take care of him." She mumbled, "I feel anxious dealing with her."
Just after these words, her arm was lightly slapped by Mother Cheng, who said, "Which daughter-in-law doesn’t have to interact with a mother-in-law? You’re doing well to deal with it now."
Cheng Su pursed her lips but stayed silent as she heard footsteps approaching.
Elsewhere, Father Qi was also speaking to Mother Qi: "...You really don’t think before you speak. Saying such things makes whose face look bad? They’ve helped us with our grandson for so long. Even if there’s no credit, there’s effort. If you’re not grateful, don’t be insulting either. Aren’t you ashamed?"
Mother Qi said, "I wasn’t intentional, and I wasn’t referring to them. I was just talking about ourselves. Besides, I didn’t say anything wrong. We have a son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Why should we celebrate at someone else’s home?"
"Is that someone else’s? It’s your own daughter. You’re outdated, still dividing a holiday between daughter and son’s homes? It’s about where you want to be; the most important thing is being invited." Father Qi glared.
Mother Qi snorted, "I don’t have the face to be that unwelcome guest."
"It’s easy for you to say. If the daughter-in-law took the grandson to the son’s place, would you still go to the daughter’s home? Father Qi sneered, "To be unwelcome? What you’re doing now is just that, isn’t it? Even Xiaoqi knows better, but you’re out of touch."
Mother Qi’s face changed slightly, lips pressed thinly, "A small child knows nothing; he’s just repeating what others say."
Father Qi laughed coldly, "A Prophet, huh? He knows to learn just to wait here for you? Xiaoqi is smart and knows right from wrong."
He was very pleased with Qi Xiaoqi’s cleverness, such a young child, yet so sensible. Must be good genes.
Mother Qi still wanted to retort when they heard knocking at the door, it was Cheng Su inviting them out to have some fruit.
Father Qi responded and went out, and Mother Qi sulked alone for a while before she left the room.
