The moment Cheng Su exited the room, her mother-in-law's knowing words reached her ears, prompting a half-smile directed at Qi Taiguo, her gaze filled with unspoken understanding.
Qi Taiguo cleared his throat, touching his nose. "It's alright, isn't it?" he asked.
Before Cheng Su could respond, Mother Qi chimed in, "Of course, it's alright! This is a government-issued house, sturdy and guaranteed. Look at how bright it is, much better than the old dormitory." She then turned to her son, "Taiguo, is this truly the house allocated to you? With your name on it?"
"Absolutely," Qi Taiguo chuckled. "The keys are already in hand; it can't be a fake."
Mother Qi's face brightened instantly, her hands clasped in gratitude. "Amitabha. The government is truly generous, even distributing houses. You must serve the country with utmost loyalty to repay this reward."
Cheng Su suppressed a giggle. Soldiers who risked their lives for the nation, dedicating years until they reached a certain rank, receiving a house as encouragement — it was hardly a sign of extraordinary generosity.
Indeed, a time would come when many government officials would also receive houses, fueling the fierce competition to become civil servants, sustained by the state's resources.
"Today is a joyous occasion, Su. Head to the market and buy two pounds of lamb for hot pot; let's celebrate tonight," Mother Cheng suggested with a smile.
Cheng Su readily agreed.
With the house secured, she felt an overwhelming sense of happiness and excitement.
After Mother Cheng and Mother Qi returned to the dormitory, Cheng Su seized the opportunity. Grabbing paper and pen, she began sketching a rough layout of their new home, preparing for future furniture purchases.
"The dimensions need careful measurement," Cheng Su told Qi Taiguo. "Otherwise, if the furniture we buy doesn't fit, it will be quite a hassle!"
"Understood. I'll borrow a measuring tape from the army and we'll measure it again," Qi Taiguo replied, wrapping an arm around her and looking into her eyes. "However, I know it's a lot of work for you, getting everything set up."
Cheng Su smiled warmly. "This is my home; how could it be considered hard work? If there were more houses, I'd be delighted to put in even more effort!"
"Don't worry, there will be more in the future," Qi Taiguo declared confidently, lifting his chin.
"Look at you, so full of confidence," Cheng Su playfully poked his chest with her finger.
Seizing the moment, Qi Taiguo pulled her into his embrace, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness. He knew he had earned this, and he was capable of providing for his family.
"Whose house is this... oh, it’s Deputy Battalion Commander Qi’s..."
A sudden voice from the doorway caused the couple to quickly separate. Looking over, they saw Big Sister-in-law Zhong, the family member of Battalion Commander Zhong Yinde.
"Sister-in-law Zhong," Cheng Su said, nudging Qi Taiguo and flashing a bright smile.
Big Sister-in-law Zhong laughed heartily. "Did I interrupt something?"
"Not at all. Please, come in!" Cheng Su stepped forward, taking her arm.
"You got a house! I just came to take a look. We're neighbors now; I'm in 404. Let's visit each other often!" Sister-in-law Zhong said cheerfully, her eyes scanning their new home. "How many square meters is yours? It looks similar to ours. By the way, when are you two moving in?"
"You entertain Sister-in-law Zhong for a bit. I'll head back to the troops first!" Qi Taiguo said to Cheng Su with a smile.
Cheng Su waved him off. After Qi Taiguo departed with a smile, she turned back to Sister-in-law Zhong. "They said it's 83 square meters. We just got the house; it still needs some fixing up and furniture arrangements. We're hoping to move in before the New Year. How about your family..."
