After sharply reprimanding Sister-in-law Hong, Cheng Su turned and pushed her son back towards their home. The moment Cheng Su’s figure vanished from sight, Sister-in-law Hong, pointing an accusing finger in Cheng Su’s direction, erupted in curses. "Just look at her arrogance! Isn't everyone here older than her? So young, yet she dares to lecture us! Is possessing a bit of money truly something to boast about?"
A quiet murmur went through the crowd. It was true, Cheng Su had indeed reprimanded them. Moreover, they were all older than her, but they couldn't match her confidence, especially since her husband held a higher position than any of theirs! The unspoken question lingered: why hadn't they refuted her when she was present, choosing instead to wait until she was gone?
Seeking to diffuse the tension, someone attempted to mediate. "Alright, alright, Sister-in-law Qi makes a valid point. Let's show respect for the departed and refrain from further discussion to avoid unnecessary discomfort. By the way, have you all heard? Just around the corner, a child from the bun store was reportedly kidnapped..."
Meanwhile, Cheng Su carried Qi Xiaoqi upstairs, conversing with her son as they ascended. "In the future, don’t be like those idle individuals who are only good at gossiping and speaking ill of others behind their backs."
She continued, her voice tinged with emotion, "Since ancient times, it's been easy to kick someone when they're down, but difficult to offer help during a blizzard. This is precisely what that means. Someone's husband has just passed away, and they are still engaging in gossip, showing not a shred of sympathy. Yet, they used to laugh and chat with Sister-in-law Gao. You see, it's only when misfortune strikes that people's true colors emerge."
As she spoke, her eyes welled up slightly, and she let out a small sniffle.
She was feeling genuinely sad.
A small hand reached up, gently touching the corner of her eye and making soft sounds.
Cheng Su looked down to see Qi Xiaoqi gazing at her, his eyes filled with a profound concern that seemed to extend even to his mother.
"Good boy, you know how to care for Mommy." Cheng Su planted a kiss on his small, bald head.
When the child reached his hundredth day, Mother Cheng had insisted on shaving his fetal hair, leaving his head perfectly smooth and bald.
Upon returning home, Mother Cheng was already engrossed in cooking, while the two children from next door sat watching television.
"That Sister-in-law Song really has a thick skin, always bringing her children to our house to watch TV. The electricity bill keeps skyrocketing," Mother Cheng whispered indignantly to Cheng Su.
Cheng Su smiled. Ever since the incident involving the oil theft, Sister-in-law Song had likely faced a stern talking-to from Song Cheng. She had begrudgingly purchased a new can of oil and pressed it into Chunhua’s Household’s hands, a gesture that clearly pained her. Nevertheless, she had resumed her usual demeanor afterward, seemingly indifferent to whether people disliked her.
The twins greeted Cheng Su in unison, calling her 'aunt,' before their gazes were once again fixed on the television screen.
Thankfully, the two children still possessed a modicum of good manners.
Qi Taiguo returned shortly after. Upon noticing Song Cheng’s children present, he simply sat down on the sofa without a word, prompting the twins to announce their departure to head home.
"Look at you, not even a slight smile! Just a stern face that scares the children away!" Cheng Su playfully chided as she handed him a glass of water.
"The matter concerning Gao Linbing has been settled. All records have been purged, and all information pertaining to him has been destroyed," Qi Taiguo stated, rubbing his forehead. From this point forward, Gao Linbing, and anything associated with him, would cease to exist.
Cheng Su sat down beside him and remarked, "This was to be expected, wasn't it? No one can be certain if he managed to transmit any secrets to Japan."
"I believe that back in his hometown, only Gao Linbing's true parents and relatives would be subjected to monitoring," Qi Taiguo added.
Cheng Su pressed his shoulder and sighed. The status of a spy was incredibly sensitive; the government would undoubtedly treat such matters with the utmost seriousness.
"Let him remain in your heart," Cheng Su said softly.
