Gao Linbing reveals to Qi Taiguo that he is a spy from an enemy nation, having taken over the real Gao Linbing's identity years ago. Despite having a life and family, Gao Linbing declares his loyalty to his country and prepares to act, even if it means sacrificing his son's well-being. As Zhao Ming lies injured, Gao Linbing pressures Qi Taiguo about a list, hinting at the limits of his past leniency.

The sharp report of the gunshot echoed as Qi Taiguo’s leg erupted in searing pain. He collapsed onto one knee, gritting his teeth at Gao Linbing, his free hand fiercely grasping the bleeding thigh as crimson rapidly saturated his clothing.

"This serves as a reprimand. The next shot might find your head," Gao Linbing stated, his expression unreadable.

"And if I refuse?" Qi Taiguo retorted.

"Consider Xiao Qi," Gao Linbing replied evenly. "He's barely three months old and hasn't even uttered 'Dad.' And Cheng Su, she's still so young. Should you perish, she might remarry, and Qi Xiaoqi could bear another's name!"

Qi Taiguo's eyes blazed with fury, his jaw clenching. "Gao Linbing!"

Just then, a message crackled over the walkie-talkie: the gunman had been apprehended. Gao Linbing's composure faltered for a moment.

This was his chance. Qi Taiguo surged forward, but Gao Linbing's weapon discharged, only to be deflected. The bullet blazed harmlessly into the sky.

Gao Linbing, no amateur himself, spun with practiced ease, subduing Qi Taiguo and landing a series of punches.

Qi Taiguo wrestled against him.

However, it wasn't long before Qi Taiguo sensed a critical flaw. Wounded and at a disadvantage, he expected Gao Linbing's formidable strength to easily pummel him into unconsciousness. Yet, the blows landed without significant force.

Before Qi Taiguo could fully process this, Gao Linbing had retrieved the fallen firearm. With deft precision, he aimed it squarely at him once more.

A flicker of movement caught his eye – someone was approaching at speed, and frantic shouts erupted from the walkie-talkie.

"Shoot!" Qi Taiguo roared at him, his voice raw with anger.

Gao Linbing let out a low chuckle.

With a flick of his wrist, Gao Linbing emptied the chamber, retaining only a single round while holding the rest in his hand.

Qi Taiguo froze, just in time to see Gao Linbing swiftly turn the weapon towards Zhao Ming and fire.

"No!" Qi Taiguo lunged desperately.

A muffled groan, as Zhao Ming was struck, reached his ears.

Approaching footsteps thundered – the rest of the unit had arrived, their rifles trained on the scene.

"Deputy Battalion Commander Qi, what is occurring? Please provide an explanation."

"Gao Linbing has defected!" Qi Taiguo declared through clenched teeth.

A wave of shock rippled through the assembled soldiers, their weapons now focused on Gao Linbing.

"Requesting authorization to engage."

Gao Linbing, however, merely laughed.

Qi Taiguo, pressing down on Zhao Ming's abdominal wound, fixed him with a cold stare.

Gao Linbing slowly rose, the gun still aimed steady, his smile faint and clear.

A sudden unease washed over Qi Taiguo. As he raised his own weapon, intending to end his own life, a dawning realization struck him – he had anticipated his move.

He pulled the trigger.

Bang!

"No!"

Gao Linbing took a bullet to the chest and collapsed. Gazing up at the azure sky, he noted its beauty, a beauty he would never witness again.

"Gao Linbing!" Qi Taiguo scrambled towards him, his eyes bloodshot.

His own gun was empty; he had intended to force their hand, to provoke them into ending his life.

The shooter kicked Gao Linbing's weapon away, their own firearm remaining fixed on him.

Blood trickled from Gao Linbing's lips, his gaze beginning to lose focus, yet a smile persisted as he looked at Qi Taiguo. "I did not betray my country."
