Welcoming a fresh family member sparks tremendous joy. Though they haven't laid eyes on the grandson, Mother Qi displayed unusual generosity, directing Father Qi to get a basket of eggs, color them red using red paper, and hand them out to neighboring homes, proclaiming the Qi family's new grandson. This also mutes the tongues wagging about their daughter-in-law's barrenness.
Thanks to this clever step, the Qi household now stands proud, with Mother Qi's posture even more upright. If only her legs allowed it, she'd strut through the village bragging that the Qi line has its heir.
A newborn calls for merry celebrations, yet Qi Taiguo serves as a soldier under strict military rules—he gets just one day off, no more in a row. Thus, the day after, he skips the hospital, saving his visit for after duty.
So Qi Taiguo enlisted Qi Fenglian's aid to watch over them for a couple of days, since Mother Cheng needed to prepare meals for Cheng Su, and the fresh mother-son duo required oversight once discharged.
Cheng Su was barely recovering her strength, convinced the worst pain had passed, when she learned breastfeeding hurt just as fiercely.
As her son nursed blissfully, Cheng Su's heart swelled with mixed sweetness and ache, numbness settling in. To Qi Fenglian, she sighed, "You grasp a parent's grace only after bearing a child yourself; it's truly grueling. Pregnancy tests you hard, birth pushes harder, breastfeeding matches the torment, without forgetting the looming confinement, sigh."
Qi Fenglian let out a light laugh, "By your words, the years of raising him will prove even tougher!"
Cheng Su bobbed her head solemnly, "Yes, raising a child to a hundred years old means ninety-nine years of worry."
"It gets simpler when he attends college down the line," Qi Fenglian remarked.
"Fat chance—there's still wedding him off and minding grandkids," Cheng Su countered. "Bottom line, kids arrive to claim their debts!"
No sooner had she spoken than the babe in her embrace quit suckling, as though grasping her meaning, even darting a look her way.
"Oh, you cheeky imp, caught that, did you?" Cheng Su arched a brow, softly tweaking his little cheek.
Qi Fenglian witnessed it right then and warned, "He's too tiny yet—skip pinching his face, lest his mouth gets crooked."
Cheng Su flushed with embarrassment, shooting the infant a mock glare, inwardly grumbling that he got babied too much, not even a pinch permitted.
"All kids come debt-collecting, just like we did to our own parents, right?" Qi Fenglian noted as she folded diapers. "Motherhood hits you with how lacking you were back then!"
Cheng Su mumbled her accord before veering the chat toward the shop.
Qi Fenglian halted her diaper-folding and revealed, "Shi Ling declared she won't go on!"
Cheng Su blinked in shock, "How come? She was faring great."
Shi Ling had stuck around two years, thriving steadily, yet now chose to bow out?
Qi Fenglian chuckled, "Relax, it's happy tidings! Remember the fellow eyeing Shi Ling? She's said yes to wedding him and plans to build her life near the Capital."
"Ah, that explains it. Can't fight fate then—so when's her exit?" Cheng Su pressed.
"This month," Qi Fenglian answered.
Cheng Su dipped her chin, "Scout a fitting replacement from the shop staff, bump them up for the long haul, and bring in fresh help!"
Qi Fenglian nodded in agreement.
Once the little one finished feeding and dozed off, Cheng Su passed him to Qi Fenglian for the stroller and queried, "Shi Ling snagged her second shot at love—found anyone good for you, big sis?"
Qi Fenglian flushed pink and chided softly, "Haven't pondered it."
Cheng Su eyed her sideways, "For real?"
Qi Fenglian faltered, shaking her head.
Cheng Su read the shyness clear, sensing a potential match but nothing confirmed. Fine, she'll spill when the moment feels right.
