Awakening The Only SSS-Rank Class! Now Even Dragons Obey Me Chapter 727: Why Did You Kill James?

The primary office of the Everlight Moon Guild.
Within Varnos’s office, a rift abruptly split the void, and two men staggered out one behind the other, crashing to the floor.
Blood drenched their bodies, their garments ripped apart, their hair in wild disarray. Though pain didn't show on their faces, deep gashes marred their forms.
Obviously, they were in dire straits. Strangely, their top-tier healing abilities were hardly functioning, reduced to the level of a mere Rank B recovery.
"Those spineless cowards pulled off such a filthy move," Varnos spat with boiling rage.
He was well aware of the Goblin Guild's cowardly and useless nature, yet he hadn't anticipated their utter shamelessness—stooping to some mysterious poison just to bring them down.
"Regardless, they've claimed victory for the moment. We must purge this poison from our systems immediately," Daniel sighed heavily.
He wasn't lacking in fury; quite the opposite, he seethed at himself for falling victim to such a pathetic ploy so foolishly.
But what choice did they have? The deed was done, irreversible. Their smartest move now was to expel the toxin as fast as possible.
"I tried everything, but nothing worked. We'll need a treasure that can annihilate the poison," Varnos replied wearily, struggling to rise.
He'd attempted countless approaches, yet none could eradicate the cursed poison within him. Any brief success was fleeting; it always surged back fiercer.
Daniel rose too, and together they exited the room toward the elevator. Bypassing the buttons, the guild leader commanded loudly:
"Floor 999."
With those words uttered, the elevator rocketed into motion at breakneck speed, feeling less like floor transitions and more like dimensional leaps.
Upon arrival as the doors parted, Daniel stared in astonishment. The sight before him bore no resemblance to the rest of the guild structure.
It resembled a vast cavern, guarded by a colossal gate at its mouth. Varnos advanced, pressing his palm into a handprint indentation, swinging the gate wide.
Shoving his shock aside, Daniel trailed him inward. The tunnel stretched endlessly, yet they reached the end far quicker than anticipated.
"So many treasures?" Before him lay an immense hoard of potent artifacts, stacked haphazardly in chaotic piles.
Sure, it paled against the Pagoda of Eternity's riches, but on their guild's scale, it was staggeringly vast.
Varnos rummaged through the pile. After what felt like an eternity—dozens of minutes—he unearthed his prize: a verdant orb.
He slumped to the ground, back against the cavern wall.
"I hope this does the trick. If not, we're done for," he inhaled deeply, pressing his hand to the green orb.
A tremendous surge of power flooded into him—not demonic, but utterly pristine and immaculate. The most refined energy imaginable.
This force rejected all taint and corruption. Upon invading his body, it launched a purge against every intruder.
Excruciating torment overwhelmed his senses. The pure energy unleashed its full might against the poison.
Initially, it held the upper hand, but gradually, the clash's result grew unpredictable.
Varnos's eyes bloodshot from agony. The toxin seemed bent on inflicting unbearable suffering to make him abandon the purge.
"You okay?" Daniel settled next to him upon witnessing this and inquired.
"The process isn’t easy."
"Obviously. But we don’t have a choice, right? The Goblin Guild will come here sooner or later and surround us."
"Those cowardly bastards... yeah, they definitely won’t pass up a chance like this to wipe us out. Now they even have an excuse to attack us," Varnos let out a cold snort.
The murderous intent in his voice rang crystal clear. This fiasco enraged him beyond measure, yet he remained powerless.
All the nation's powerhouses, and even those from nearby lands, likely thought James fell to Daniel. Denial was impossible.
Full-blown war had erupted. The Goblin Guild scum would soon encircle them with hordes and elite Awakened.
"Even the other major guilds might side with them," Varnos added icily.
Their pretext was ironclad, potentially drawing in the National Awakened Federation to back them outright.
They'd become the nation's most wanted outcasts.
"If not for that array and this poison, I could've slain both Jason and Alaric for sure. Their demise would've crippled the Goblin Guild," Daniel lamented regretfully.
At this juncture, holding back was pointless. He'd have eliminated them without hesitation—he possessed the strength. But their despicable schemes let them not only live but drive the duo back.
"Why did you kill James?" Varnos questioned abruptly. He craved the Goblin Guild's end, but not if it united the country against them.
"It wasn’t me. I didn’t want to kill him. My final attack was in the most limited state possible. Its full power could have killed everyone there, but I have no idea why he died. It really wasn’t my doing," Daniel frowned deeply.
He was convinced James's death wasn't on him, but if not, whose fault was it? Witnesses had all pinned it on his strike...
However, Varnos's brow furrowed.
"During the early part of my fight with Alaric, I felt like I was making too many wrong decisions. I got provoked too easily and even used wrong skills and moves. It was only when we entered the void that this feeling disappeared."
"And drinking that wine... why did we trust it so easily? Especially when we knew for sure they had a plan for us in this ceremony?" Varnos pointed out something they had overlooked until now.
"Now that you mention it, I noticed the same thing. I made a lot of wrong decisions too," Daniel frowned as well.
"Could it be...?"
Suddenly both of them realized it. That array didn’t just weaken their physical and spiritual power, it had also weakened their minds. It seemed to have made their decisions and actions no longer fully under their control.
"Damn it!" Feeling that they had been played, they became even more furious.
Where the hell had those bastards gotten such an array from? And how far in advance had they planned this?
Daniel calmed his mind. This wasn’t a plan thrown together at the last minute. It was clearly very carefully prepared.
Hmm?
Suddenly the green orb began to glow, and a moment later, BOOM! It exploded.
"Looks like the detoxification failed."
