Alaric lauded James as the future heir of the Goblin Guild amid cheers at the grand gathering. James concealed his seething hatred for Daniel, ignited further by Sara approaching him instead. Daniel hinted at an impending action, urging his friends to leave when the time came, with Varnos's approval. Sensing their powers sealed by a mysterious force from the wine, they watched as Alaric announced a successor duel, and James chose Daniel as his opponent.

The Goblin Guild's main hall plunged into utter silence right away. It felt like all breaths were stuck in throats across the room.

James, his face twisted in a smug, venomous grin, jabbed his index finger right at Daniel.

"Him. I want to fight him." His voice rang out clear and resolute, bouncing off the hushed hall walls.

Sara covered her mouth with a hand, while Joe grinned slyly. Both had figured this jerk would target Daniel. Even now, he clung to those ancient grudges.

"But that's even better. Daniel, teach him a real lesson! Thrash him until his mother couldn't identify him," Joe declared.

Varnos arched his brows faintly yet stayed silent. A single look revealed the true intent of this duel to him.

They likely aimed to slay Daniel, provoke his fury, and force an assault. Yet they were fools to believe such a scheme would succeed.

These idiots had no clue about the true monster this young man embodied.

Still, one issue lingered... that wine... His Moon Law remained sealed too, unusable. Clearly, it stemmed from that scoundrel's doing.

Daniel showed no shock whatsoever. Since Alaric brought up the "duel," he'd anticipated James gunning for him.

"With the duel opponent selected, shall we switch venues?" Alaric gestured, and space warped abruptly.

In the next instant, the group appeared on viewing stands as Daniel and James faced off in the arena beneath.

"I don't even get to say no?" Daniel mocked. No one had bothered asking his willingness for this bout.

"Trash like you has no say," James sneered disdainfully.

"I figured you lacked the nerve to choose me. Long time no see. Didn't expect you'd miss me so badly," Daniel chuckled, gesturing mockingly.

"You've always acted this way, Daniel. Cocky garbage thinking the world is yours. Sara included." His gaze flicked to Sara briefly before fixing on Daniel again.

"Today, all will witness you're just a fake. After I strip your power, Sara won't glance your way. I'll stomp you beneath my boot once more."

Daniel smirked knowingly—the kind that always rattled James's composure.

"Sara never loved you, James. You merely fantasized in front of a mirror. Her response back then was pure pity. And now... still eyeing her? Pitiful."

"Her feelings for you mean nothing to me."

James's features darkened momentarily. Neck veins throbbed visibly.

"Shut your trap!"

Alaric burst into booming laughter, slapping his palms together.

"Excellent! Just what we hoped for. Arena's set. Fight!"

James drew twin long black swords from encircling shadows. The blades writhed like fluid shadows, oozing darkness.

"Law of Darkness... Twin Shadow Blades." He whirled them into position.

Daniel merely balled his fists. His sword stayed unsummoned.

He realized that cursed wine blocked his primary laws. His inner power source lay sealed. No matter—he didn't require it.

His sheer bodily might sufficed to smash a Rank S like Varnos, much less Rank A rubbish.

James stood no chance from the start in this duel. Sadly, he chose the worst foe.

Naturally, this was their scheme, fully seen through by him. Regardless, pummeling James near death suited him fine.

"Fists alone will suffice to smash garbage like you."

James struck first.

[Chains of Eternal Shadow]

Shadows erupted from the floor like serpents, lunging at Daniel's legs to bind and sap his energy.

Daniel thrust a punch at blinding speed. Yet... the blow lacked force!

His fist snapped just one chain. The others coiled around his legs like vipers.

"What...?" Daniel scowled. His strength had plummeted horrifyingly. His body felt demoted to Rank A.

Previously, one punch could level mountains. Now, mere shadow chains ensnared him!

What in blazes was happening? Why the massive power loss?

That wine, perhaps? Yet the issue felt external, not internal.

James exploited the gap, charging with dual blades.

[Eclipse of Darkness]

A vast dome of pitch blackness engulfed the arena. Light extinguished instantly. All went dark. Only James's eyes gleamed red.

"Blind now, Daniel."

James struck from the rear. A sword carved Daniel's shoulder deeply. Blood gushed. Daniel leaped away, but sluggishly. Far too slow.

"Daniel! What's happening?! Why so feeble?! Faking it?" From the stands, Sara murmured anxiously.

Varnos creased his forehead. He knew Daniel's true might. This defied belief.

James cackled, advancing relentlessly.

[Void Slash]

Swords birthed tiny voids. Each swing devoured space, nullifying Daniel's counters.

Daniel swung punch after punch, but all dissolved into nothingness. James drove him back repeatedly. Cuts bloomed on arm, flank, thigh.

"This... isn't right."

Daniel pondered amid retreat. His physical prowess had sunk below Rank A. Something consumed his energy core.

He triggered Mana Healing to seal wounds, but recovery crawled.

James assaulted anew.

[Whisper of Nightmares]

A sinister murmur invaded Daniel's thoughts directly.

"Sara... Sara belongs to me... you're the thief... she always wanted me..."

Daniel's mind reeled briefly. Visions of Sara embracing James assaulted him.

"Damn..."

He clenched teeth, smashing fist into ground to shake it off.

[Abyssal Armor]

James donned full darkness plating. Daniel's blows got soaked up and flung back doubled.

"My strength... why the huge drop?" Daniel retreated, gasping.

Then, his sharp senses caught subtle array pulses etched into the arena floor.

A colossal concealed formation targeting law comprehension, energy circulation... and raw physical force too.

"This formation... its origin? Even restraining me... Such potency... inconceivable." Daniel's eyes widened faintly.

Confirmed as an array curbing him, but whence? No formation should hobble him thus at his level.

Unless crafted by a Demi-God...

"Mr. Varnos... why Daniel... why so powerless? He's... he's..." Sara stared at Varnos in dread from afar.

Varnos's face grew grave. Unbelievable—the youth who'd nearly slain him in one hit days prior now toyed by Rank A.

James laughed once more, twirling swords.

"See? You're worthless, Daniel. Pure phony. Now all see it. Where's that prodigy, Everlight Moon Guild's gem? No better than scum."

Daniel drew a steadying breath. Wounds still oozed, but eyes iced over. Vitality ignited within.

He torched life essence to partially expel the toxin.

And it succeeded!

By incinerating vitality for energy to quash poison, he forced back some venom. He cycled this fiercely until reclaiming a sliver of strength.

Main laws stayed inaccessible. Body remained crippled, yet now non-law skills worked.

"Well... now the true fight begins."
