Huo Shiqian learns from Chang Luhui that Lian’er escaped during her breastfeeding period, abandoning her child. He informs Xia Chuyi of the incident, downplaying it as a minor issue to protect her postpartum emotions, assuring her Lian’er poses no threat. Xia Chuyi insists on Lian’er’s capture and punishment, and Huo confirms the child is fine.

Huo Shiqian remarked, “Being abandoned by Xia Lianlian might actually be a blessing for this child.”

A cold glint filled Huo Shiqian's eyes as he uttered those words.

Xia Lianlian's deeds closely resembled those of Mother Xia.

Huo Shiqian recalled how Xia Chuyi had been swapped at birth all those years ago.

Even knowing her own baby had been exchanged, Mother Xia kept silent back then, terrified that the Xia Family might cast her out.

To secure her freedom now, Xia Lianlian exploited the child before ditching him and making her escape.

Mother and daughter alike placed their own interests above their children, never holding them dear in their hearts.

Xia Chuyi remained oblivious that her husband's sudden compassion for her arose from Xia Lianlian's actions.

At Huo Shiqian's words, Xia Chuyi gave a gentle sigh and replied, “Yes, having a mom like that is worse than not having one at all.”

“Forget it, let’s not talk about her,” Xia Chuyi added. “All we need to do is take good care of Huo Shiwu.”

“Mm.” Huo Shiqian cast a glance at the child and murmured softly.

With that, the couple dropped the matter.

Meanwhile, in a corner of Province H.

“Enough, why are you still following me?” Within a modest county town, Xia Lianlian shouldered a bundle, her face twisted in extreme impatience as she snapped at Mother Xia, “I’ve already escaped, you don’t need to follow me anymore!”

In truth, Xia Lianlian had fled without any plan to take Mother Xia with her.

Mother Xia had trailed after her of her own accord.

“Lian’er…” Mother Xia's eyes brimmed red as she gazed at Xia Lianlian and pleaded, “Child, you’re my child. If I don’t follow you, who else can I follow?”

“I was the one who was wrong before, for not staying by your side as you grew up.” As Mother Xia wiped a tear, she continued, “But now, I’ve finally found you. Of course I can’t abandon you again.”

“Can’t abandon me again?” A cold snort escaped Xia Lianlian. “You make it sound so nice!”

“You’re just afraid that when you’re old there’ll be no one to look after you and see you off when you die!” Xia Lianlian declared without mincing words.

“You—Lian’er, how can you say that…” Mother Xia's eyes widened instantly at this. Her body quivered, and only after a prolonged silence, while dabbing her eyes, did she insist, “Mom has never thought that way!”

“How can you think of Mom like that?” Utterly wronged and bewildered, Mother Xia protested. “You’ve misunderstood Mom. Mom is just afraid you’ll be deceived and bullied out there…”

Xia Lianlian's impatience boiled over at the sight of Mother Xia, and she barked, “Enough, enough, stop crying at me like someone owes you something!”

“It was you who didn’t watch me back then, that’s how I ended up in a human trafficker’s hands!” Xia Lianlian rolled her eyes while adding, “And because your relationship with Xia Chuyi was bad, she didn’t want to help me either!”

“Hmph, anyway, this is all your fault!” Xia Lianlian stomped her foot emphatically.

“Yes, it’s all Mom’s fault…” Mother Xia's tears poured endlessly as she responded to Xia Lianlian's accusations.

The sight of Mother Xia only fueled Xia Lianlian's growing irritability.

“I can’t be bothered with you!” With a dismissive wave, Xia Lianlian stormed off.

Mother Xia stood frozen for a moment, brushed away her tears, and hurried after her.

They hadn't traveled far before Xia Lianlian approached a phone booth and dialed a number straightaway.

“Hello, this is Xia Lianlian!” Arrogance laced Xia Lianlian's voice, evoking her former days as Miss Ou.

“You had your people get me out because you want something from me, right?” In a superior tone, Xia Lianlian questioned the voice on the line. “Go on then, who exactly are you?”
