After Marrying the Officer Chapter 1202 - 1201: One in a Thousand Chance
Previously on After Marrying the Officer...
Xia Chuyi snatched the pastries straight from Aunt Xia’s grasp.
No one could convince Xia Chuyi that her own aunt would ever hurt her.
Could it be that another person had exploited her aunt’s hand?
Her pensive expression in that instant drew the immediate notice of everyone around.
"Chuyi, do you know anything?" Huo Shiqian questioned her right then.
Shaking her head, Xia Chuyi replied, "I'm not certain, but I harbor some suspicions..."
She went on to detail the situation with the pastries.
"I first assumed the pastries were merely stale and upset my stomach," Xia Chuyi reflected aloud, "but looking back now, something was definitely off with them..."
Armed with this vital lead, Huo Shiqian paused briefly before declaring, "Don't dwell on it too much, Chuyi. Leave it to me to sort out."
"Start by drinking some porridge. Doctor Cheng will fetch the test results for us shortly."
Gently guiding Xia Chuyi to a seat, Huo Shiqian turned to Mrs. Ou and said, "Mother-in-law, please stay with Chuyi. I'll head out with Uncle Guo for now."
After his words, Huo Shiqian offered Doctor Guo a subtle nod.
Doctor Guo acknowledged it with a nod, replying, "Fine, come along with me."
The pair departed the examination room ahead of the rest.
After obtaining the report and identifying the toxin type, Huo Shiqian's face grew exceedingly somber.
Noticing his demeanor, Doctor Guo approached and clapped his shoulder, consoling, "Don't shoulder such a heavy mental weight. Should this child not survive, more will come in the future."
Yet Huo Shiqian stayed mute for moments, staring intently at the report, before whispering, "Uncle Guo, given the minimal toxin amount, is there truly no hope to preserve the child?"
Doctor Guo answered, "The poison plays one role; administering an antidote to Chuyi introduces another."
"It harms the fetus, just as the antidote carries its own risks to the fetus."
"Thus, the fetus escaping unharmed stands at best a one-in-a-thousand shot," Doctor Guo sighed, pressing on, "The most probable outcome involves brain damage for the child—put bluntly, it could enter the world mentally impaired."
"Giving birth to such a child spells suffering not just for the parents, but torment for the little one too."
Doctor Guo's stark words crushed the final flicker of hope within Huo Shiqian.
His grip tightened progressively on his fist, shadows deepening in his eyes as he murmured, "I see."
Back in the consultation room with Doctor Guo, Xia Chuyi and Mrs. Ou had regained their composure.
Slowly spooning porridge, Xia Chuyi drew a gaze from Mrs. Ou filled with deep heartache and tender pity.
"Chuyi..." Huo Shiqian began, his voice abruptly thickening with emotion, "concerning the child..."
"Concerning the child," sensing his impending words, Xia Chuyi swiftly cut in with striking poise, "we must deliberate on it more thoroughly."
Her composed manner revealed to Huo Shiqian her unwillingness to let go of the child.
Glancing her way, he opted against urging her further, striving instead to mask his turmoil and appear steady before her.
"Very well, let's ponder it once more," Huo Shiqian echoed her sentiment, "Uncle Guo, with Chuyi's current state, might I bring her home first?"
In response to his inquiry, Doctor Guo nodded, stating, "Certainly, you may."
