A Hospital in Another World? Chapter 1077: Garrett's Super Bear Training!
Previously on A Hospital in Another World?...
The bear form was indeed much simpler than the leopard form.
Garrett joyfully ran through the forest. Ah~~~ Raise the left front paw, raise the left hind paw, raise the right front paw, raise the right hind paw…
This solid and straightforward way of running was much easier than the leopard’s method, where you had to move your spine and swing your tail for balance!
And it wasn’t slow either! Garrett glanced at Appa beside him.
On flat ground, he certainly couldn’t match the Silver Moon Deer in a short sprint; but when it came to crossing roots or climbing slopes—where the Silver Moon Deer needed to take a detour—the black bear, with its lower and more stable center of gravity, would just climb straight over!
"Garrett! Don’t avoid this bush! You’re a bear now! You’re a bear! Push aside the branches and charge right through!"
"Roar! Wooo wooo wooo…"
"He’s in bear form, not wild boar form," Sisoyin calmly called out from behind, moving the branches aside to let Garrett through. "Respected Lady Moon Song, you’re overestimating the little bear’s defense capabilities. It’s good enough that he’s running steadily. Combat training will come slowly!"
"Woooo…"
Garrett nodded vigorously. After nodding for a while, he suddenly started shaking his head.
No, why should I fight in bear form?
I’m a spellcaster! I’m a healer! Why would I be at the front lines like a tank?
I can just stand in the back and cast spells!
Wait, I don’t even need to stand still to cast spells—I’m a doctor, and my battlefield is the operating room! Unless absolutely necessary, I don’t even need to fight!
Still, the feeling of being in bear form was quite good. Garrett ran freely through the forest, bumping into things here and there. Paths that previously required careful steps were now easily crossed with a full sprint!
Slopes that previously required inching down were now dashed across!
Roots that previously required hand-and-foot coordination and great effort to climb over…
He stood up on his hind legs, pushed off with his rear paws, pressed down with his front paws, and climbed right over!
"It’s over, another kid has gone bear-crazy…"
Aishe Moon Song sighed helplessly from behind. Sisoyin smiled warmly, walking alongside the black panther.
"Kids, huh? The first time they experience the joys of becoming an animal, they’re always excited for a few days... Ah, it’s only at times like this that we remember Garrett is just a little over twenty, still just a cub!"
"Cough, cough…"
Lady Jasmine coughed forcefully. Garrett is a half-elf! A half-elf!
He’s just like me, with half-human blood!
He’s in his twenties, so if he’s a cub, what does that make me in my thirties? A youth? A child?
We were both raised among humans, and in our twenties, we’re definitely not considered young anymore! Before this, Garrett was already running a research institute with dozens of mages, even high-level mages of the eighteenth rank working under him!
Aishe Moon Song glanced at her, quickly sticking out her tongue. She sped up, walking alongside Garrett, constantly giving him pointers.
"Becoming a bear means you need to make good use of the bear’s strengths! It’s not just about running—listen closely, can you hear where the water source is?"
Bernard raised his head at the sound, listening carefully. The rustling wind, the chirping insects, the distant roars of wild beasts—all echoed through the forest. But hearing the sound of trickling water among them…
Bernard raised and lowered his head, turned left and right, straining his ears but still couldn’t hear any water. If he were left in this place to find water, he’d probably have to walk a few extra miles, following animal trails and plant growth patterns to locate it.
Then, he saw the furry Garrett lift his head, rotate his neck, and twitch his small round ears… He raised a paw and confidently pointed to the left.
"Mm, very good, well done!"
The black panther lifted a paw and gave Garrett a pat. Then, with another paw, he nudged him:
"Now for the second training: Come on, sniff around and see if you can find something good to eat nearby. Or rather, which direction is the edible food?—Tonight’s dinner depends on you!"
The black bear seemed a bit puzzled. He stood there, sniffing hard with his nose, but for the moment, couldn’t find a direction. Food? Something edible? Something tasty?
Freshly baked bread?
Fragrant roasted meat?
Trembling, golden, crispy yet not greasy pork belly?
Crisp and refreshing stir-fried lotus root with water chestnuts?
None of those are here!
What do you want me to find? What tasty things could possibly be in the forest?
"Stop daydreaming!" Smack! The black panther swatted him on the head. Luckily, the claws were all retracted, just a soft pad hitting him, which to the bear, only made his head tilt slightly without causing any pain. He snorted and looked back:
Why’d you hit me?
"Follow your instincts."
Aishe Moon Song softened her tone, gently coaxing. She lightly circled around Garrett, her tail tip swaying in front of his eyes:
"Don’t think about what you usually eat or how you cook it. Immerse yourself in your body, draw upon your bear instincts… Let your body tell you, this is tasty, that is tasty, that there’s something tasty over there…"
Garrett slowly lay down. His eyes half-closed, his body gently rose and fell as he let his primary consciousness recede, allowing his instincts to take over:
A bear, a bear that grew up in the mountains and forests, what would it want to eat?
What would it love to eat?
Suddenly, he sniffed, then started running. After a dozen steps, he used his front paws to overturn a rock—Boom!—ants, centipedes, and all sorts of insects scattered in panic, running and flying in all directions.
Garrett: !
!
Don’t come near me!
He stood up on his hind legs, frantically flailing his front paws. After a few swats, he realized it wasn’t working, so he dropped to all fours and ran away as fast as he could.
Along the way, he crashed through bushes, knocked over small trees, and flattened saplings, not stopping until he had run fifty or sixty steps, finally coming to a halt, whimpering pitifully.
"Well… Insects are very good food, they can effectively fill our stomachs… If there’s really nothing else to eat, eating insects is a good option too…"
Not far above him, Aishe Moon Song’s amused voice rang out. Garrett rolled his eyes, huffing:
I know, crunchy and chicken-flavored, right? High in protein, right? Just have to pinch off the heads, right?
Unless I starve to death right here, I will absolutely not eat bugs!
I’m a spellcaster! I have spatial equipment with me! I’m never short on food at any time!
"Alright, this experience teaches you to control your instincts, to balance reason and instinct." Aishe Moon Song smiled as she comforted him:
"After smelling them once, you know it’s insects, right? If you don’t like eating them, just don’t go after them next time! Come on, sniff around again, see if there’s anything else tasty nearby…"
With a mix of coaxing and comforting, she finally calmed Garrett down, who then tried sniffing again. As they traveled, he kept sniffing until, after a while, he suddenly rushed to a tree and began digging around the roots.
"Hmph… Hmph… Cough cough…"
The black bear swung his front paws, furiously digging into the earth. Aishe Moon Song followed and, upon seeing what he had found, was pleasantly surprised.
"Oh my, it’s a ‘Black Gem of the Jungle’! A very precious mushroom! Garrett, don’t move, I’ll dig it up!"
She even reverted to her human form, letting a small cluster of vines sprout from her fingertips, which swiftly burrowed into the leaves and soil. Before long, the slender and tender vines had unearthed a large, black object.
Aishe Moon Song quickly wrapped it in some leaves and stored it away.
"Garrett, well done! This mushroom is delicious! When we camp tonight, I’ll cook it for you all!—Now, keep searching!"
And so they continued, searching as they traveled. A few times, they found nothing, and a few times they found things that left everyone in fits of laughter, like an anthill, a spider nest, or a green-furred sloth.
These things might appeal to a real bear, but to Garrett…
"Garrett, you’re not allowed to touch them!"
Cirilla shrieked. The thought of those ants, spiders, and that slow-moving, green-furred sloth crawling all over her made her feel sick!
"Almost done, let’s try one last time!" Aishe Moon Song happily encouraged Garrett. Garrett, dejected, dragged his feet forward slowly.
So tired…
Running around like this all day, I’m drenched in sweat…
And I haven’t found much. It doesn’t feel like it would even fill my stomach…
Can’t I just go hunting? Find one big prey, and we’ll have everything we need! Oh, maybe except for Cirilla…
Suddenly, a strange fragrance wafted over on the wind. Garrett’s ears perked up, and he lifted his head, sniffing, then sniffing again. The next moment, he changed direction and dashed off like an arrow.
"Garrett! Don’t run too far!—We’re about to camp and eat!"
Cirilla called out from behind. Garrett roared back in response, then pushed off with all four paws, reaching his top speed for the day. Aishe Moon Song and Sisoyin exchanged smiles and followed leisurely behind.
Before long, thunderous roars erupted from ahead, coming from beneath a tree.
"Rooar—"
"Rooar hooo~~~"
"Rooar hooo hooo~~~"
Cirilla raced forward. After a few twists and turns, she emerged from the undergrowth to see the black bear standing on his hind legs, clawing at a beehive taller than a person.
Around the hive, bees swarmed furiously at him, but the black bear had his head buried in the hive, eating away without lifting his head.
"Garrett! Get out of the way!"
The silver dragon girl cried out, jumping up and down. Honey! Honey!
Since leaving the research institute, she hadn’t had honey desserts in so long!
"Garrett, move!"
Aishe Moon Song had already shifted back into her human form and was shouting commands. As she yelled, she pointed forward, and a faint green mist appeared out of thin air, drenching the black bear’s head…
The black bear shook his head, finally snapping out of it. He stepped back, took one last look at the hive, and then turned away. All that was left of the poor hive was a shattered half, with a mixture of honey and bee larvae dripping down.
Aishe Moon Song chuckled. Not eating bugs?
Don’t want to eat bugs?
But you were quite happy eating the bee larvae in that hive!
Of course, she wasn’t surprised by Garrett’s behavior. After transforming into an animal, learning to control one’s wild instincts while harnessing the animal’s natural abilities was a lifelong lesson for any nature devotee.
Even elderly nature devotees sometimes became so engrossed in their animal forms during a fight that they forgot they were originally elves, wandering into the wilderness to live out the rest of their lives as animals…
Garrett wouldn’t go that far. He was just beginning his training, and with proper guidance, he’d be fine. The key now was…
"Sisoyin! You handle communicating with the bees, and I’ll collect the honey! It would be such a waste to let all that honey go!"
"Tonight, I’ll show you all what I can really do!"
That night, creamy mushroom soup, red braised wart hog, honey-glazed venison steaks—there was a whole table full of food. The honey-roasted nuts, toasted until amber-colored with floral nectar, became the most sought-after dish among the group.
Everyone feasted happily, praising the elf’s cooking skills, while Garrett pitifully huddled in a corner.
"Garrett, you’re not allowed to eat too much! Don’t you dare get fat!"
