“I’m taking you to meet someone.” Sister Ling proceeded ahead, offering little explanation as she guided the way.
“Be cautious,” Feng Jing said, holding Yin Tao’s hand and giving her a look of reassurance.
Jiang Xing observed from the side, a feeling of displeasure growing within him. He couldn’t pinpoint why this man consistently irked him.
“Xiaotao, are you with him because he’s a police officer?”
Yin Tao turned her head to glance at Jiang Xing, a smile gracing her lips. “Why do you ask? Must I have a reason for choosing to be with someone?”
“No, if you truly have a preference for police officers, I can introduce you to several who are superior. At the very least, they are younger and more handsome than him!” Jiang Xing understood that Yin Tao did not harbor feelings for him, yet he was unwilling to see Yin Tao with this bothersome man.
“Certainly, I know quite a few individuals within the police station. If you can genuinely find someone more handsome than Brother Feng, I’ll acknowledge your capability.”
Yin Tao was entirely truthful. While she might not know an extensive number of police officers, Feng Jing was universally recognized as the male idol in everyone’s hearts. Yin Tao did not believe anyone surpassed Feng Jing in outstanding qualities.
“Young Master Jiang, cease your antics here. Their relationship appears strong. Regardless of your words, it is futile.”
Sister Ling arrived at a weathered iron door. Gazing at Yin Tao and Feng Jing, who were holding hands tightly, she addressed them with a gentle expression. “Cherish each other. It is indeed quite rare to discover a pair like yourselves, so deeply in love and so well-matched.”
“That’s sufficient, Sister Ling. In what aspects are they compatible?” Jiang Xing couldn’t help but roll his eyes in Feng Jing’s direction. He then noticed the imposing iron door before them and inquired with surprise, “What is this place? Why is it situated so remotely? Had I not known you for many years, I might have suspected you of illicit activities.”
“You shall understand once we are inside.” Sister Ling unlocked the heavy door with a key, activated the flashlight on her mobile phone, and entered.
Feng Jing followed closely behind Sister Ling, maintaining a vigilant grip on Yin Tao’s hand.
Jiang Xing brought up the rear. The clang of the iron door shutting echoed loudly, sounding particularly ominous in the near-total darkness of the surroundings.
“This place is actually this expansive? There’s even a basement?”
Jiang Xing was not the sole individual taken aback. Even Feng Jing and Yin Tao were astonished to find such a vast space contained within.
“Let’s go. Come down with me.” Sister Ling had no intention of offering explanations and proceeded directly into the basement.
Feng Jing and Yin Tao trailed closely behind. After finally descending the stairs, the environment before them gradually normalized.
“Why does this place resemble an ordinary dwelling?” Jiang Xing surveyed the decor and furnishings, finding no discernible difference from his own residence.
“It is merely an ordinary residence. My actual home is too far from the tavern, so occasionally, I opt to stay here when I find the commute too burdensome.”
Sister Ling led them further into the basement. “This area used to be a bar. I had plans to integrate it with the tavern after purchasing it, but I simply lacked the capacity. This location is somewhat out of the way, so I utilized the ground-level space as a warehouse and converted the underground areas into living quarters.”
“Sister Ling, your residence is truly immense. However, are you not concerned about living alone?” Yin Tao considered the subterranean environment to be rather gloomy unless illuminated, finding it somewhat unnerving for a woman to reside there.
“The location is so secluded that it’s highly unlikely for anyone to stumble upon it. What is there to be apprehensive about?” Sister Ling smiled and halted before the door of a closed room. “Furthermore, I am not the sole occupant here anymore.”
“Jingjing, someone wishes to see you.” Sister Ling knocked on the door. Not only Feng Jing but also Yin Tao and Jiang Xing widened their eyes in sheer disbelief.
Shortly thereafter, footsteps emanated from within. The door soon swung open, revealing a face astonishingly similar to Cheng Yao’s before them.
“Young Master Jiang?” Liu Jing expressed mild surprise upon seeing Jiang Xing. However, what intensified her unease were the two unfamiliar faces of Feng Jing and Yin Tao.
“Do not be alarmed. We are police officers from the branch. We can absolutely ensure your safety.” Feng Jing had anticipated that Sister Ling would know Liu Jing’s whereabouts. Nevertheless, he had not foreseen Liu Jing hiding in this particular location.
“Sister Ling, didn’t you mention that contacting the authorities wouldn't resolve the issue?” Liu Jing exhibited a slight relaxation upon learning the identity of her visitors as police officers. However, she still directed a look of concern towards Sister Ling, her expression conveying considerable distress.
