“There are plenty of empty dorm rooms, and my room has an extra bed too,” Bai Luo said warmly, pulling Yin Tao along. “No need to go through all that trouble. I’ll help you fill out the check-in form, and you can just stay with me.”
“That works perfectly.” Though they had only spoken a few words, Yin Tao found the girl in front of her to have a genuinely likable personality. The original Bai Luo wasn’t a significant character in the novel, mainly because the original Yin Tao had already left her forensic doctor position. However, Yin Tao could tell that the girl beside her was far more agreeable than her own manipulative younger sister.
Under Bai Luo’s cheerful assistance, Yin Tao rapidly grew accustomed to the police station's surroundings. Her adaptability was evident, making her a far better fit for the role than the original Yin Tao could have been.
“Xiaotao, after your trip home, why do I feel like you’ve become a completely different person? You used to be such a chatterbox,” Bai Luo remarked, noticing Yin Tao silently packing her belongings and speaking very little. Bai Luo sensed that Yin Tao was considerably more composed than before.
“Oh… is that so? Perhaps it’s because I’ve decided to dedicate myself to my work seriously,” Yin Tao replied, hanging up clothes in the wardrobe with a slightly forced smile.
It became clear that she was vastly different from the original Yin Tao; even colleagues who hadn't known her long noticed the change. Fortunately, she hadn't stayed at the Yin family home, or her abnormality would undoubtedly have been detected by Yin Ning and Zhao Yue.
“Really? Didn’t you mention wanting to finish your internship and then transfer to another department?” Bai Luo appeared somewhat confused. Yin Tao had previously expressed a clear aversion to the work of a forensic doctor.
“No, I’ve re-evaluated my priorities. Forensic science is the most fitting career for me!” Yin Tao’s tone was firm. For her, while everything else was uncertain, the profession of a forensic doctor was the sole area where she still held a measure of confidence.
“That’s wonderful! I’m truly looking forward to working alongside you,” Bai Luo expressed genuine happiness. The forensic doctors she had encountered previously were significantly older than her, making a young and attractive female forensic doctor like Yin Tao a rare find.
As she neared the conclusion of her packing, Yin Tao’s eyes couldn’t help but twitch while glancing at a wardrobe filled with drab, monochromatic dresses. While packing at the Yin residence earlier, she had discovered the original Yin Tao possessed a remarkably bland fashion sense. The original Yin Tao shared her own youthful face, but seemingly in an attempt to emulate Yin Ning’s pure demeanor, she consistently wore demure, ladylike long dresses. This resulted in an appearance resembling a child playing dress-up in her parents' clothes, neither here nor there.
“Bai Luo, is there a shopping center anywhere nearby?” Yin Tao genuinely wished to discard these garments.
“Yes, there is! Let’s go together; I need to buy some clothes myself,” Bai Luo declared, promptly pulling Yin Tao out of the dormitory.
Yin Tao’s heart swelled with warmth as Bai Luo held her hand. It seemed this unfamiliar world wasn't quite as daunting as she had initially feared. Yin Tao felt that as long as she worked diligently and kept a considerable distance from the novel's main characters, she could still carve out a fulfilling life for herself, even if returning to her original world was impossible.
However, the gulf between aspiration and reality proved vast. The moment they stepped onto the bustling main street with Bai Luo, Yin Tao heard her name being called from behind.
“Yin Tao!”
Yin Tao turned around. A man, appearing to be in his late twenties, emerged from a sleek silver-gray sports car and approached her and Bai Luo.
Yin Tao recognized the man instantly. He was elegantly dressed in a sharp white shirt and black trousers, standing at approximately 1.8 meters tall. His features bore a resemblance to hers, though conveyed a far more mature and stern aura.
This individual was the original Yin Tao’s elder brother, Yin Hao. He carried himself with a mature and steady demeanor but displayed a somewhat detached attitude towards others. Yin Hao and Yin Tao shared similar facial structures, yet compared to the willful and imperious Yin Tao, Yin Hao evidently favored his gentler, more sensible younger sister, Yin Ning.
“Big brother.” Yin Tao understood a confrontation was inevitable and greeted Yin Hao with a composed tone.
“Ah, out shopping with friends?” Despite his reservations about Yin Tao, Yin Hao endeavored to treat his two younger sisters with equal consideration.
“This is Bai Luo, a detective. She’s my partner during my internship,” Yin Tao introduced, looking at a captivated Bai Luo with a helpless smile. Indeed, regarding looks, her elder brother was undeniably exceptional.“Officer Bai, hello. My sister can be a bit mischievous sometimes, thank you for looking after her,” Yin Hao said to Bai Luo with impeccable gentlemanly conduct. He then produced a card from his wallet and pressed it into Yin Tao’s hand. “Go buy something you like with your friend and choose a gift for Dad. It’s Dad’s birthday on Sunday, so don’t forget to come home.” Yin Tao accepted the card from her brother, feeling a bit uncertain. Sunday was when the main characters were set to appear, and she genuinely wished to avoid causing any disruption.
