Transmigration

“How can you claim to be innocent? You were the one who shoved me first!”

A sharp female voice pierced through the air beside Yin Tao’s ear. She rubbed her throbbing head, and upon opening her eyes, she found herself staring at a stunning, long-haired young woman with an exceptional aura, glaring daggers at her.

“Yin Tao, didn’t you go to the police station for an internship? How is your physical fitness still this dismal!” The long-haired woman’s tone was far from friendly, a flicker of disdain crossing her features.

“Babe, you shouldn’t be unaware of how dangerous head injuries can be,” Yin Tao, still processing the bewildavement of her situation, couldn’t help but offer some professional medical insight. “Severe head trauma, if it leads to hemorrhage, can result in post-traumatic shock or even prove fatal.”

The long-haired woman’s expression shifted, clearly taken aback by Yin Tao’s unexpected response. An uncomfortable silence hung in the air, only to be abruptly shattered by a stern feminine voice.

“Enough! Take your forensic jargon back to the autopsy lab!”

A woman, impeccably dressed and heavily made-up, strode towards Yin Tao and scrutinized her as if she were some kind of ill omen. Frowning, she declared, “Ningning is destined for the grand stage; an injury to her is a dire affair, unlike you, who spends your days dealing with the deceased!”

Yin Tao felt a surge of confusion. While the woman was correct about her profession, why did her words sound so uncannily familiar?

Observing the two women before her, Yin Tao deduced, based on their twenty-year age difference and striking resemblance, that they must be mother and daughter. The opulent villa living room provided the backdrop. As she took in the tableau of the mother and daughter pitted against her, a chilling realization dawned – this scene was eerily identical to a melodramatic novel she had perused just last night!

On the persistent insistence of a colleague, Yin Tao had delved into a web novel titled “Nirvana Rebirth.”

The novel’s protagonist, Yin Ning, was depicted as a graceful, delicate, and captivating dancer. Having endured immense tragedy in her first life, Yin Ning was reborn, vowing to exact revenge for her past humiliations. Not only did she resurrect the family business from its decline, but she also captivated the heart of an outstanding young master, achieving triumphs in both love and career, and single-handedly rewriting her entire family’s destiny.

Yin Tao, it turned out, was the cannon fodder supporting character burdened with the same name. She was the biological elder sister of the protagonist, Yin Ning. Resentful of her family’s blatant favoritism towards Yin Ning, Yin Tao had consistently obstructed her path. In a misguided attempt to appease her family, she had relinquished her forensic pathology career to marry a wealthy heir, only to find herself in a subservient existence within her in-laws’ household, her value contingent on the child she bore. Following Yin Ning’s rebirth, Yin Tao’s circumstances devolved further, rendering her a mere foil to the protagonist’s rise. Stripped of her career and ultimately abandoned, she met a tragically desolate end.

Gazing at the mother and daughter before her, Yin Tao’s mind worked at lightning speed. With a measured tone, she declared, “You two… have never truly considered me family.” Having uttered these words, Yin Tao swiftly retreated upstairs, leaving the mother and daughter utterly stunned.

“What is wrong with her now?” Zhao Yue had always harbored dissatisfaction with her elder daughter’s passive disposition. Ever since Yin Tao embraced her career as a forensic doctor, she felt an even greater sense of unease, deeming her cursed.

“My younger brother called, intending to take me to a gathering tomorrow. She wanted to tag along, so now she’s throwing a tantrum with me…”

Yin Ning’s gaze followed the direction of Yin Tao’s hasty departure, a flicker of bewilderment in her eyes. According to the original narrative, Yin Tao was supposed to engage in an even more heated confrontation before her mother’s return, culminating in a struggle that would send her tumbling down the stairs. Zhao Yue, by chance, would witness this incident, thereby deepening her animosity towards Yin Tao. Furthermore, Yin Ning’s injuries would have rendered her unable to attend the following day’s social event.

Since her rebirth, Yin Ning had been treading cautiously, cherishing this chance to reshape her fate. In her past life, a devastating traffic accident had ended her dancing career, and the Yin family’s business had subsequently collapsed. Gripped by overwhelming stress, she succumbed to illness before reaching the age of thirty. Ironically, her elder sister, with whom she had been at odds since childhood, had married into a wealthy family and appeared to be living a life of comfort.

Yin Ning refused to be defeated. Heaven had granted her a second chance, and she was determined to seize it. However, the sudden deviation from the plot caused by her hot-tempered elder sister left Yin Ning with a gnawing sense of unease. Nonetheless, she resolved to attend the gathering the next day, if only for the sake of the person she had longed for in her past life. She had to go.

Yin Tao dashed into the room on the upper floor without a pause. It was only when she laid eyes on the face in the framed photograph that matched her own that she let out a breath of relief. Whether it was an act of muscle memory or sheer fortune, this particular chamber was indeed the original Yin Tao's personal bedroom. "No way! This cannon fodder supporting female character not only shares my name but also my exact likeness?" Yin Tao stared into the looking glass, doing her utmost to come to terms with her present circumstances. Had her demeanor been a bit out of character just moments ago? Yin Tao had sincerely attempted to echo the original Yin Tao's dialogue, yet she found herself utterly disinclined to engage in disputes. The recollection of the astonished looks on the faces of the mother and daughter downstairs prompted her to scratch her head in resignation. "Ah! Transmigrate if you must! But to land such a woeful part!" A shiver coursed through Yin Tao at the mere thought of the events that were soon to unfold. She had no desire to enter into marriage, bear children, make compromises, and resign herself to a life as a discontented spouse. "Did I actually perish from a prolonged stint of staying up all night engrossed in reading?" Yin Tao remained utterly clueless as to the reason for her awakening within this novel. On that note, she had no certainty regarding her living or deceased status in the real world.
